I put this 12-40t 9 speed cassette together for my daughter's new 26" wheel bike.

Its made up from an e*thirteen EX 40 cog, the bottom part of an XTR 12-34 cassette and the top part of an XTR 11-34 cassette. End result is an awesome cassette range in a fairly lightweight package (302g). Full details here. Highly recommended if you want a wide range 9 speed setup, could probably also be built using any other 9 speed setup that allows the cogs to be mixed and matched.

Good job. Yours is likely better than mine, built using 11-36 10s compatible Hope T-Rex 40, 11-13-15 and 34 from SRAM PG970 11-34 and 18-21-24-28 from another 11-32 cassette.

Did you have to modify the cassette at all where the 40t mates with the 34? I'm running an XT 11-34 now and I'd much rather go this route than deal with doing a ten speed upgrade just to be able to get that wide of a range. Also, that combo of blue on the hub/cassette/qr looks awesome!

Nice looking setup. Been thinking of getting one of their 40t to keep with the other products I'm running. It's what I would need for my 1x10 hard tail to put a bigger front ring on to help out on top end. I also have a 1x9 on trail bike with the 12/36 boat anchor 29r cassette but could also use a little more granny. I have an XTR 11/34 stored somewhere. Now to find a 12/34 to pull from.

Thanks for the article.

Cheers guys. I didn't have to modify the 34 at all. The spacing between the 34 and 40 will be slightly narrower (10spd) so you may have to use a shim to get the slightly wider 9spd spacing but I found this wasn't necessary. This would also work with other shimano 34t cassettes but gettin that nice consistent gear size changes in the smaller sprockets may be hard.

Quick update. I tried the same thing with a SRAM PG-990 11-34t 9 speed cassette and a XT 11-34t 9 speed cassette. Both mate up to the 40t sprocket OK, but there is a problem at the other end of the cassette. Adding 40t big ring means you must remove a sprocket from somewhere else in the cassette range. With the 990 and XT cassettes, the 6 largest cogs are mounted on a carrier and the three smallest (15, 13 and 11t) are separate. You need to keep the 11t and the 15 is narrow, so removing it does not reduce the width of the cassette down by a gear. The only sprocket you can remove is the 13t, but it is also a little special - it has a machined groove into which the 11t fits. The 11t is also wider than normal 9 speed spacing because of the groove in the 13t. Without machining the 11t down, I don't think the 990 or XT cassettes will work properly.

My custom cassette with 40t T-Rex works now flawlessly. Spent little more time to get bent RD hanger straight, then to play with B-adjustment to get upper hockey s near to T-Rex as possible but still shifting to/from it properly. Now all other gears work without struggling. No needed to file and degree cogs.

Very satisfied, so much that bidding X.9 9sp trigger to replace much ridden X.7...

Nice work! I've been working some wide range 9 and 10 speed cassettes for years because Shimano and SRAM just don't seem to make what I want. Many people say why would I want gears that low 'cause they can walk faster then I ride the stuff. But in the end, I can say I rode the whole thing without stopping and cleaned it.

Anyway, just wanted to say great job on doing work and stuff for your kids' bikes. She's lucky. I've certainly seen it's more then the size, it's somehow scaling down the weight..........Keep up the awesome work!

P.S. - I want to see more pictures of the whole bike. Looks sweet!!

Posted this in another 1x9 thread in the All mountain area, but thought it's relevant here.

Thanks for the inspiration tigworld. I did this with X7 short cage and two different SRAM PG970 cassettes mixed and matched. One 11-32 and a 11-34.

Installed new Fouriers (Taiwan based company, do they also manufacture for One-up or E13?) 40T ring. Got this because I live in Asia and it's reasonable price and easy to find.

I had been thinking about exactly the setup I wanted for a while. So went 40-34-28-24-21-18-15-13-11 which gives a lovely flow to the cassette profile, because gaps are 6t-6t-4t-3t-3t-2t-2t. Read other reports and had previous a look at the rear derailleur B-screw and realized it needed to be wound out, also derailleur thing that sits on the hanger. Took out the b-screw and put it in backwards, near max extent but made sure some was poking through the other side, perfect. Next put on a new 9 speed SRAM chain PC991, wrapped the chain round the cogs plus 4 links.

Works well enough, well OK some of the ramps on the different SRAM cassettes don't match up perfectly pretty worn cassettes and an old rear derailleur don't help much, and it can be a bit slow to shift up to the 40t, still rest of gears no worse than it was before.

Pretty happy, not perfect but close enough for me. I wouldn't recommend a 42T, seems too much for this RD, it might be possible if you had a 12-36 cassette and/or maybe a different RD.

Still fail to understand what cage length has to do with shifting, I thought that was to accommodate front rings.

Just busts a few myths....
-You must have a medium or long cage RD to run a 40T extended cog! (not true, although might be better solution)
-You must have a clutch type RD. (not true, although might be better solution)
-You can only run extended range on 10 speed. (not true, although might be better solution)
Longer term I might choose an SRAM 10 speed or Shimano XT cassette and 10 speed chain with a Zee RD and shifter, or it's good enough might leave it for longer.

Hi all.

Digging up an old thread because I wanted to provide my input for those that may want to try this.

I added the e thirteen 42t cog to my shimano cassette but unfortunately my rear derailleur wont work with it. with the b-screw all the way in, theres just not enough clearance for it to reach the 42t cog.

Anyone know a 9 speed rear derailleur that works with the 42t cog?

just to add to this, if you use an SLX 9 speed cassette the 3rd smallest (15t i think) is a flat gear with a plastic spacer, that sits up against a flat gear, so you can just remove that to get rid of one whole cogs worth of space and make room for a one up or other "extra" big cog at the back.

i only know coz i just took one off and noticed that difference from the XT one i was putting on t replace it.

It would work, but... Any of the cheaper steel cassettes that are held together by a long screw can be made into a wide range cassette by mixing and matching cogs. You just need to remove some from the middle and find the right replacment cogs.

Any more, for the price, a 10-speed widerange cassette is cheap enough ($65) that it's just as easy to start there and get a new shifter/derailure.

I've now made a 11-40t cassette out of an XT 11-34t cassette. It did require removal of the fixed 17t from the cassette, but nothing more than a grinder and file is required. Took about 15 minutes. Works well. I used an old cassette just in case, but I can confirm that the results are worth it, so would have no hesitation modifying a new XT next time.

Hi, i see that long range 9v cassette are not dead, and is a good news.
Following the idea here i realized a 11-36 cassette mixing a 990 11-32 and a 980 11-34 sram, with an italian 36 cog for 9v

(Pignone 36 MTB - PMP Bike ComponentsPMP Bike Components).

I've utilized the first 3 cogs of the 11-34 and the last 5 of the 990:

11-13-15- (from 980), 18-21-24-28-32 (from 990) 36 (single cog).

In such a way i've been able to use the supported cog of the 990 to minimize hub denting only to the 36 (aluminium).

So far so good, perfect shifting and regular spacing.

Looks like a great setup Defraz. More consistent spacing % wise than the stock 10-speed 11-36 setups. It's about getting the right spacing for your riding style, and more gears is definitely not always better.

I bet a 38t big cog would work great if you could get it to shift correctly.

Hi JACKL,
yes i like the spacing, is the same of some sunrace cassette (Sunrace CSM99), afaik the only produced 11-36 cassette.

And yes again, a 38 cog would be super. Do you know if some company is producing it? I will try to search, you gave me an idea...

I'm thinking about an 11-38 or 11-39 cassette to improve my setup and retain shimano zee compatibility.

Alternative are aluminium:

Ari Corone

or titanium

Action Tec

both are avaiable 38 or 39. The first is italian too ;)

aluminium is supposed to be lighter and more gentle with the aluminium hub. Is studied for xx 11-36 10v sram to replace the last 36 cog, so spacing could be more close but is supposed to work with a 32 sram cog. It seems tenting. Contacted producer and don't guarantee compatiblity with 9v but following the thread it seems that 10v extender work well with 9v

I thought that EX1 was a cool idea but the price of that cassette is insane so I made my own. check it out blueliquidlabs.com/articles

I did an 11-46 spread with the last 5 cogs on alloy carriers but they're bolted on instead of riveted so you can replace them individually.

The Ari Corone only works with the XX cassette (so 10 speed only). Even though its aluminium, the design of the XX cassette is such that you won't get any freehub gouging from the gear.

The Action Tec would allow you to order the specific individual cogs you wanted to build the cassette. Each cog is separated by a spacer. If you use spacers off a 9 speed cassette (like what cheap 9 speed cassettes have) then you'll have the proper spacing for a 9 speed setup.

I just purchased! Installed, existing medium cage rear derailleur attached. Didn't work properly.

I was advised to purchase a long cage derailleur. Instead I purchased a goat link and all is well. Great upgrade.
