Any ideas as to if a Sram pg950 cassette might be able to accept an expander cog? I know the earlier post said the 990 wouldn't work but the 970 would.
It would work, but... Any of the cheaper steel cassettes that are held together by a long screw can be made into a wide range cassette by mixing and matching cogs. You just need to remove some from the middle and find the right replacment cogs.

Any more, for the price, a 10-speed widerange cassette is cheap enough ($65) that it's just as easy to start there and get a new shifter/derailure.

Thanks...that's kinda what I was thinking. I'll probably just bide my time and see what parts I can get on sale over time and put it together that way.

Hi, i see that long range 9v cassette are not dead, and is a good news.
Following the idea here i realized a 11-36 cassette mixing a 990 11-32 and a 980 11-34 sram, with an italian 36 cog for 9v

(Pignone 36 MTB - PMP Bike ComponentsPMP Bike Components).

I've utilized the first 3 cogs of the 11-34 and the last 5 of the 990:

11-13-15- (from 980), 18-21-24-28-32 (from 990) 36 (single cog).

In such a way i've been able to use the supported cog of the 990 to minimize hub denting only to the 36 (aluminium).

So far so good, perfect shifting and regular spacing.

Looks like a great setup Defraz. More consistent spacing % wise than the stock 10-speed 11-36 setups. It's about getting the right spacing for your riding style, and more gears is definitely not always better.

I bet a 38t big cog would work great if you could get it to shift correctly.

Hi JACKL,
yes i like the spacing, is the same of some sunrace cassette (Sunrace CSM99), afaik the only produced 11-36 cassette.

And yes again, a 38 cog would be super. Do you know if some company is producing it? I will try to search, you gave me an idea...

I'm thinking about an 11-38 or 11-39 cassette to improve my setup and retain shimano zee compatibility.

Alternative are aluminium:

Ari Corone

or titanium

Action Tec

both are avaiable 38 or 39. The first is italian too ;)

aluminium is supposed to be lighter and more gentle with the aluminium hub. Is studied for xx 11-36 10v sram to replace the last 36 cog, so spacing could be more close but is supposed to work with a 32 sram cog. It seems tenting. Contacted producer and don't guarantee compatiblity with 9v but following the thread it seems that 10v extender work well with 9v

The Ari Corone only works with the XX cassette (so 10 speed only). Even though its aluminium, the design of the XX cassette is such that you won't get any freehub gouging from the gear.

The Action Tec would allow you to order the specific individual cogs you wanted to build the cassette. Each cog is separated by a spacer. If you use spacers off a 9 speed cassette (like what cheap 9 speed cassettes have) then you'll have the proper spacing for a 9 speed setup.

At the end of the day i purchased a couple of sunrace csm990 11-40 9v black cassette on aliexpress, were impossibile to find here in Europe (not imported) and the price is really competitive.

Very good quality, i mated it with a zee 10v, cursom spacer for cable actuation, pilo s10 derailleur hanger (similar to goatlink, https://www.bikerumor.com/2016/02/17/found-direct-mount-adaptive-derailleur-hangers-from-pilo/) and a 9v gripshift i had in the bin.

It's a sort of proof of concept for 9v, wide range, short cage with clutch, but it's working ok for me so far.

Will put photos if someone is still interested in the topic.

I'm interested!

Just made an 11-40 as well, from an XT 11-34 + Hope 40t-rex + 18t leftover cog - 17t - 20t...

I'm interested!
So, there are the photos.
Cassette is sunrace csm990, 11-13-15-18-21-24-28-34-40, all cogs are steel and the last 3 (28-34-40) are supported with spider. Declared weight is 425gr (didn't check myself).

Derailleur is shimano zee with pilo s10 hanger, shifter is gripshift 9v with spacer on the derailleur cable insertion to tune shifting. I used a 10v chain i had around (yaban).

Chain length is the shortest possibe without arriving at full range for the derailleur for the 11 cog...

Bike is the park-funny-shorttravelbutheavy one and is very funny btw

How about using the cassette from the sram EX1 groupset for an 11-48t range, 8 speed cassette.
I thought that EX1 was a cool idea but the price of that cassette is insane so I made my own. check it out blueliquidlabs.com/articles

I did an 11-46 spread with the last 5 cogs on alloy carriers but they're bolted on instead of riveted so you can replace them individually.

Nice! I enjoyed browsing your other custom solutions too.
What are the cog sizes/jumps? Weight? Just curious how it compares!

I've always said just give us the range/spread with just 8-10 cogs. Did you start with sunrace's 11 sp cogs? Well done!

With the new sunrace 46-11 10 sp cassettes out, i'm looking forward to try one out.

Yeah I started out with two sunrace 10 speed cassettes, one 11-46 mtb and one 11-25 road in order to get the right gears for a smooth spread. If I remember correctly, I think it was the 18 and 23t that were missing in the mtb cassette.

Over the years I've heard so many people ask for exactly what you're asking for. If there are enough people, I was thinking of ordering the cogs in bulk and making my own alloy spiders and offering this as a cult drivetrain for people who don't want to have 11 and 12 speed forced down their throats.
