Originally been looking to pick up a Cross Check, but stumbled on the Straggler at my LBS. Now I want a Straggler. My bike now has disc brakes. Also, since I have a family of four, I can't afford to build a new bike with new parts, so to minimize cost I plan on using most of the components off my Cannondale Bad Boy.

This is my inspiration:

This is my donor:

I think most of the components should transfer ok. I may need to get new headset, BB, and seat post. I am 5'8'' with 29" inseam. Planning on getting a 50 or a 52. What are you thoughts?

Ok, Hi all. I'm waiting for my Straggler to arrive (probably tomorrow) and am wondering what sort of pedals to go on it. I realise it's probably somewhere in the thread but with 65 pages to get through if you don't mind, this might be the best way to ask.
I use carbon Looks on the road bike, Shimano XTR on the MTB and platforms on the SS and Commuter. This bike is for Gravel Road rides, 3 hours + and to replace the commuter.
My current thinking is Crank Bros pedals, European MTB shoes (skinny feet!) but am open to any suggestions from people that know the bike better than me!!! Cheers, Stephen.

Put on whatever pedals make you happy.

I have Time ATAC pedals on there, but I don't think that's going to last too long. I've gone to the darkside of platforms for too long and every time I try clipless again I wish I hadn't.

I don't think the answer has anything to do with your bike, particularly. All of my bikes have Crank Bros -- road, cross, two mountain bikes -- because I like Crank Bros.

Seems like to me that since you have Shimano on your MTB, you would just get Shimano for this bike so you don't have to get a new pair of shoes for new cleats. No?

Because of the long training/fun rides I want to go clipless but I get the joy of platforms.

Lol. Yep, that would have been logical however I'm not that bright. Also, the MTB shoes get pretty wet and muddy in winter sometimes so I think I'll stay away from them as commuter friendly.
I'm guessing the shoes won't have to be as hard core MTB so that might open up a number of ideas I haven't thought of. I haven't done touring/gravel other than the odd MTB gravel ride so don't have much of an idea about what's out there. In NZ we can be a bit limited in brands too. Did any of that actually make sense??

Yeah i get it.
I have a pair of Pearl Izumis that I wear on the cross/gravel/roadie jaunts and a pair pf Shimanos that I seem to wear more on the trails. I don't know why.
But the Shimanos always look like hell. Nevertheless, Crank Bros all the way.

Well just to confuse the issue... I just bought the Look s trac pedals as the crank bros ones were out of stock at the wholesalers and a pair of Specialized MTB/touring shoes as they had Vibram soles and as I might walk a bit in them I thought why not!
I also went mad and got a pair of limited edition S Works road shoes for the Road Bike at great expense....Christmas Pressie to myself???

Here's my approach on the subject.

What size tires are you running? I'm trying to figure out what the fattest tire I can cram into the frame is. I had loads of clearance with the 42mm X Kings, so I ordered a set of WTB Nano 2.1 and 2.2 X Kings (heard these ran small) to try out as well.

So I absolutely fell in love with my Straggler over the weekend. I built it up from the frame as a do everything commuter and was pretty happy with it. However something just hadn't clicked yet. It is a great bike, but it really just felt like a slightly heavier (albeit much more nicely specced) version of my old commuter. This weekend I slapped some knobbies on it and finally took it out on the trails. Oh. My. God. It is totally a rigid mountain bike. It obviously can't handle really technical stuff, but it ate up the trail in a way that was totally unexpected. I'm just now exploring mountain biking after 10+ years of road biking and this is an awesome rig for me to get my toes wet. Anyway, a picture of my build is below.

I've got Maxxis Beaver 29x2,0 out front and Schwalbe Smart Sam 29x1,75 at the rear. Rear clearance is somewhat next to nothing, but rideable. Gonna try some 44-45 mm Conti next.

Nice! I've not even gone near clipless yet - I like the idea of being able to use the Straggler in street clothes when commuting - and then I found these on AliExpress - pink anodised flats that are extremely light. Let's hope they don't disintegrate when I'm merging with the traffic coming off the motorway!

They sure look good though.

Here is my frame right out the box.

Thanks to Michael from 20/20 for the build. He was a close high school friend and just happens to be the best bike mechanic in Bmore. You can also see my Bad Boy getting parts stripped off it.

Here she is in her natural habitat. There is not a lot of flat bar Stragglers out there, but seeing more and more everyday.

I leave shoes at work to wear. I use flats on the single speed though.
