Sram Cassette with Shimano 12 speed?

Has anyone had luck running a Sram cassette with the 12 speed shimano drivetrain? I have ran it in the past but I know the 12 speed stuff has a little more going on with the shifting ramps, etc.

Im thinking on purchasing a cheap wheelset to run some XC tires on but if I have to buy a microspline driver for $140 it makes these wheels less attractive at the price they are.

Yep been doing it for several years. The pull ratio is a tiny tiny bit off in the order of less than 0.1mm per gear, but that difference compounds as you move through the cassette. As a result the indexing is more trickly to get dialed in; its a very fine window of it working or not very well. It is sitll a worthwhile tradeoff as I like the adjustable clutch on the Shimano, and their double upshift levers.

I experienced this when mix/matching sram shifter with shimano derailleur. Was able to find a sweet spot, but it needed a ton of attention, I eventually just went shimano/shimano and sram/sram on my shifters and derailleurs.

With the cassette and chain, mix/match with the derailleur, I have not experienced any issue

Was just about to create a new post along these lines and this was at the top !

I have just worn out my 12 sp XT cassette, and came across a killer deal on a 12 sp X01 cassette.

Have mounted the cassette and kept the 12sp XT derailleur.

I have a brand new Shimano XT 12sp chain - is that going to create problems (excessive cassette wear?) or should I just switch to a X01 chain as well?

Not related but the derailleur has been controlled by a SRAM X01 shifter all summer and it was working great

SRAM and Shimano 12spd chains are supposed to be a bit different, and in theory they only work well with their own chainrings and cassettes. That said, I know people who run SRAM chains on Shimano cassettes with no issues (apparently).
The X01 chain lasts forever tho, to me that would be the deciding factor.

I have a Shimano back wheel build, a sram back wheel build, and eThirteen back wheel build.

There is virtually no difference aside from the different nature of sram vs shimano (hard clunks into gear vs smooth quiet shifting). No adjustments needed. It all works together perfectly well. This is my personal experience of swapping wheels across bikes since 12 speed became a thing.

I am very detail oriented, very little tolerance for even the slightest noise or imperfection.

I would think that actual experience with the set-up being asked about should have some value to the person asking the question.

It works perfectly. I have 4 bikes, a mix of sram/shimano bikes. I mix and match wheels across bikes all the time. The biggest issue is actually the brake rotor in this scenario.

EThirteen makes a cassette that works just as well across both manufacturers as well. If their third party cassette can work with both sram and shimano, why wouldn’t sram and shimano be interchangeable?

SRAM 12speed mech works awesome with Chinese "Speedao" 12speed cassettes (which currently can be bought on Aliexpress for about 100 usd shipped to the US). I'm running 3 these cassette right now and their shifting performance is 95% of an XX cassette, ie, the Speedao shifts very well and it is only under heavy force (like trying to shift while hitting a steep kicker) that the Speedao will makes some noise as the chain tries to shift to the bigger cog (but one should be timing their shift to avoid shifting under force like this anway).
And the Speedao weighs within grams of the XX cassette

Yes. Have various bikes with different 12spd setups and moved things around/experimented a fair bit. Also mixed Shimano and SRAM 12spd shifters and derailleurs. I haven't noticed any performance degradation when mixing brands (and I'm very sensitive to this kind of stuff) but each cassette definitely shifts different. The SX/NX HG cassettes shift noticeably slower, more clunky than GX or Microspline Shimano cassettes.
Also consider that most likely you'll have to adjust the cable tension and limit screws when changing wheels (and probably adjust the brakes as well).

Yeah looking around a bit the GX cassettes are quite a bit more than the SLX so may be worth just trying to source a used freehub to make these wheels work.
Sunrace may be a viable option, these will be my local XC wheelset so if it doesn't shift well it would be annoying as hell compared to my heavy wheels where its more of a pedal to the top day.

It works, but it won't shift perfect. There are slight differences in cog spacing between SRAM and Shimano. It all depends on how sensitive you are to the quality of your shifts. Some people don't notice at all, while others can't stand it.
