I have read that a Trek model sold on 29x2.6 has room for 2.8 and 3.0.
Same for Giant, their Stance and and Trance can take them.
Maybe some will say the rims are not optimal(too thin) but for some riders
they do the job. For me i like a high BB so this is an advantage.

While a high BB is one of my requirments, overinflated tires are just no... Narrow rims and 3.0 and I hate tungsten filled tires cause they ride with a crap quality and just suck right out loud!

My Trek Rail 7 is outfitted with 29x3" tires.
On i40mm rims.
Plenty of clearance -- even for serious mud.
