Is 29+ effectively a dead category for new bikes?

20001 Views 142 Replies 40 Participants Last post by  Sparticus
I have been off the bike for awhile, and this may be a function of "supply chain" issues, but things seem less dynamic for 29+ than a few years ago.

Are these bikes going to be sold and supported into the future?

From what I am seeing, tire options are dwindling in the 29 x 3.0 and 3.25 sizes, and the frame options seem more limited as well.

Old for you maybe, however I am out of touch with current trends, and thought someone here might have some insight into this question.

I had a Stanton rep on social & Steve from HTParty pretty much tell me Stanton has plans to bring out a 29+ bike by the summer(it's in testing). So, there is at least another brand bringing out a 29+ bike.

The problem isn’t with frames, it’s tires. Most 29+ options got discontinued.

I get that but it's kind of a chicken & egg situation, no? More brands bring out 29+ frames then tire manufactures will take notice?

Which 29+ tires have been cancelled? Not trying to argue, just asking for my own knowledge because I haven't had any trouble getting tires for my 29+. I currently have XR2s, XR4s, Rangers and Bombolinis that were all purchased within the last year.

Bombolinis have been discontinued, so if you found those they must have been left over. Maxxis Chronicle, Surly Knard, Vee Bulldozer... I think the WTB Ranger got discontinued in 29, but still exists in 27.5?

I should have also mentioned that I am talking specifically about 3.0s. There are still a handful of 2.8s out there. I just never cared for 2.8. I'd prefer either 3.0 or 2.6.

I see. Agree about 2.8's and personally I've never considered 2.6 as plus anyway. I always run 3.0's on my plus bike and currently have Rekon 2.6's on my Ripley and IMO they aren't even in the same neighborhood.

I feel like Trek/Bontrager are the only ones fully vested in the format at this point, with their 1120 needing shoes and in theory the Stache needing post-sale support. Even Surly seems to have given it a collective 'meh', though they do have the Dirt Wizard (for now). Surly kind of has a history of that though, almost like they get bored of what they've created. I hope the format carries on, but as they say, hope in one hand and shite in the other and see which weighs more.

You should be more clear about this. You've posted multiple comments on this topic in the last few days that sound very alarmist and lack relevant details. Per example:

I'm trying to find a post by Mikesee in the last month or two where he commented on a thread about 29+ tires and he listed off all the tires he had in stock, and there were a lot. I'm trying to remember if it was 2.8's or 3.0's or both? If someone knows what I'm talking about and you find it please post a link or copy and paste here. Thx.

Quick search results.

Surly Dirt Wizard
Surly Knard
WTB Ranger
WTB Vigalante- I think this is the 2.8 that runs oversized?
Bontrager has 2 I think, don't even know the names?
Maxxis Minion DHF/DHR
Vee Bulldozer
CST BFE
Duro Crux
Innova Transformer
Vee T-fatty

My dos centavos on that...

Not trying to be an alarmist, I think it’s kind of general knowledge that a lot of tire companies are discontinuing their 3.0 offerings and in general jumping ship on 29+. I’m not hating on 29+, quite the opposite actually. I had multiple 29+ bikes and loved all of them, and was super bummed to hear the Bombolini and Chronicle got discontinued (among others).

I’m also not saying you can’t find stuff. There are still plenty of tires floating around out there, and I’m sure Mike has quite a few. It sounds like from past conversations with him that he keeps a good amount of chubbier tires in stock. Those tires will only last as long as what’s currently out there though, so I’d personally be hard pressed to build up a new 29+ bike.

Unfortunately current stock and current/near future production are very different things. Check out this list (which used to be longer), then narrow it down to 3.0, then realize that even a few of those aren't current production anymore. I hope they stick around, but I dunno. Not looking great.

Source?

My point is that you're spreading rumors, try spreading information instead.

Yup it is dying, please someone sell me a 40mm inner width carbon front wheel for my plus mullet project. For cheap, since it is dying.

Source for what? You want me to link tire websites with tires that don't exist anymore?

Not sure why you're getting your panties in a twist about this. OP asked if 29+ was dead. I listed a handful of tires that just in the past couple years have been discontinued. I'm not on here spreading 29+ QANON conspiracies, just pointing out that yes, there have been quite a few popular 29+ tires that companies have abandoned recently. Take from that what you will. If you want to speculate that a whole shitpot of 29+ tires will suddenly hit the market if everyone buys a new Krampus, then go for it. All I did was point out that the industry is clearly not excited about that particular tire size anymore, probably because they weren't selling enough if I had to guess.

I so hope this happens. I also hope that they can keep the chainstays under 430mm and it has sliding droppouts.
