The consensus is that "yes" you can use the SRAM powerlink with other chains (most reports refer to Shimano.) This question is asked all the time (hence the response above), so if you search the forum for other responses on this subject you'll find more information on this. A few people have reported problems, but the vast majority do not. I personally started using a powerlink with a Shimano chain recently and have not had any issues to date.

so is the wipperman connex shimano compatible?? Seeing as how I have no luck finding 9spd powerlinks anywhere maybe I should give those a try

Yes, it is Shimano compatible. I run them on both 8 and 9 speed (different versions) and have had absolutely no problems. Also, they're easier to remove. The only time there's a difference I believe is in the 10 speed versions...1 for Shimano and 1 for Campy.

I've had my Powerlink come off my Shimano CN-7701 chain twice during races. No problems during regular riding, but I won't risk it in a race again.
