Hey all. I have a problem. A bike frame I have had some tape in it for the cable guides (Klein) and now that I dont need the guides on I took the tape off. There is of course a residue, and I want to get it off. What is the best way to get it off withought stripping the paint. I used gasoline last time I needed to get sticky residue off my other bike, but I dont have any on hand. Ive got methanol, but dont know if it will be harmful to the paintjob or not. What household items will get it off? I did try simple green, but that didnt work... Can I just use the methanol?

I have no idea if this will work for you, but this past summer, my mother bought me a set of burly steak knives, and each knife came with a sticker on the blade. When she removed the stickers, the tough-as-nails glue remained stuck on the blades, so she used plain ol' vegetable oil or olive oil and rubbed the glue right off. I was surprised and impressed, so maybe that's an option?

have you tried using more tape to get it off?

If you're worried about chemicals in something hurting the paint job you might just want to take some really sticky tape, duct, scotch, whatever you have handy and just stick on the gunk and remove several times. Usually it takes everything right off and leaves a perfectly clean surface. Has worked for me a bunch of times in the past to get some nasty sticker or tape residue off of surfaces.

I've always used Goo Gone for this sort of thing (exactly this sort of thing, in fact). The stuff is amazing. It easily takes off glue residue, yet I've never once had it harm paint. I've used it on everything from my bike to my fiberglass radio controled gliders.
Another vote for Goo Gone...I use it all the time to get sticker crap off of my frames. Smells good, too.
