Many people won't go out and ride due to what might be going on outdoors, with youself or personal life. What keeps you form riding, and I am not talking your job or family oblications, but along the lines, I won't go riding if ........(i am sick, child is sick, it is cold, etc)

For me it is water, It rains here allot and thus I have a MTB and a road bike that I train on, so when it rains and for a few days later I won't go out onto a mtb trail, not to mention damaging the trails. But if it is drizzing or it rained earlier and the roads are still moist I won't go out on the road bike and just stay on the trainer. I just don't like being wet, especailly my shoes. This is what sucked about this race season, every race was wet and muddy.

I know for many it is the cold, Which dosen't matter for me, but the heat will slow my enthusiasm, especially when the heat index was hitting 110+ this summer, i really didn't want to go but i would.

For me it is common cold right now. Runny nose, head ache, tears in my eyes, Dexamol caplets and a cup of tea with honey and lemon on what passes for my desk...............with my luck, it just had to happen on Wed., my ride weekday.

I don't mind cold, I mind rain/weather where there are puddles in your backyard and the ground is saturated. I don't ride the Trails when its like this b/c I don't want to create problems on that I'll have to spend time fixing when I do TM.

I fix what's broken first before I add goodies to trails. I hate having to fix a widened trail or armor an area b/c a bunch of idiots went out when the trails were too wet. It means I'll have to spend 12 hours gathering rocks for armoring and digging knicks to help the trails recover... those 12 hours would have let me build a berm and a nice sustainable off-shoot to that 25 ft roller no one's ever noticed.

Nasty weather and broken bones

Those two things pretty much cover it. I love hot weather so that won't keep me off the bike but snow and ice and rain are things I just don't want to face. Oh, night too. I have no desire to ride at night with a light that I have to take a loan out to afford.

This year a bunch of broken ribs and other serious injuries totally unrelated to mountain biking kept me off the bike for a couple of months.

At the moment, it's a foot of snow on the ground and temps ranging from -3 to +5 degrees outside. Very unusual weather for Grand Junction/Fruita.

I did have the opportunity to ride the trails in the Phoenix North Mountain Preserve this past Saturday, even though the locals thought it was very cold outside. I thought the temp was just right, about 60 degrees or so. Great trails!

Like thefriar posted, I don't ride when it's wet because it's not worth the damage you can cause on the trail. Sure, it sucks when you have a beautiful sunny day right after a rain, but in the grand scheme of things it's worth it to let the trails dry another day or two rather than getting out there and tearing up and creating a bunch of work.
Also, I'm fortunate to live in an area that doesn't get too cold so I can ride year round.

- rain and crappy trail conditions will keep me from riding (like right now in NJ)
- if my boy or wife was sick, i wouldn't try to get out then either, or if i am pretty sick i'll pass.
- i'll go when its cold out - that doesn't bother me, but if its gonna be a scorcher i just go early in the day to beat the heat.

Right now it's the weather. In the suburbs of Chicago, we just got about 7 inches of snow, and then freezing rain to accompany it. Although we did have faily beautiful weather until the 1st of december, which I'm greatful for.

Being stuck 50 miles from my house and bikes is what is keeping me from riding right now. Friday morning might be a rider for me if the trails are frozen.

Cold weather. I packed it in after a cold, dreary ride last week. Well, it was high 40's and rainy today, so I busted the Haro out for one last haul (on paved path - I don't wreck singletrack by riding through mud). High of 23 tomorrow, so RIP, 2009 season.

I'm having the same issue. My bike is on the other side of the state, sitting in a warm garage hating life since I am not on it.

Also, its about -10 degrees here with 45 mile an hour winds. Its literally breaking down doors and windows. The empty keg shell has blown away into a snow bank somewhere. We will probley find it in the spring.

Injuries keep me held down a lot, but if I'm able to pedal then I will ride, despite what doctors tell me. I have been commuting for about 12 years now, so cold weather, snow, ice storms, wind, ice, cars, deep snow, typically wont stop me. Peoples cars wont start and they feel like they cant get anywhere. I can make it to work during a blizzard, on time, no issues. Boss's, co-workers, and friends think I am out of my mind- but what do they know- they are restricted to an automobile.

Injuries and being sick!

this year, I missed three months from bad rib injuries and bad chest cold. Then I another month from a sprained ankle. and the flu. I'll be riding Sullivan Canyon this friday even if it rains. light rain is predicted. bring it!!
