This is a strange one that almost doesn't seem real. A black bear gives chase to a mountain biker on a downhill trail in Whitefish, Montana. The chase seems unprovoked and the bear goes into a full sprint!

We've seen a lot of fake ones before from the photoshop and video editing wizards. But this, by all accounts seems true. The crazy part is the bear goes into full pursuit mode and is seen taking the shortcuts (aka 'french lines') to cut off the rider and catch up to the rider. This requires knowledge of where the rider is going and it seems to be a technique when chasing down prey like deer. Our best guess is the bear must have mistaken the rider for a deer and triggered a chase instinct for a meal.

The back story is this was just posted by Montana Knife Company on their Instagram page and they're advocating carrying a knife when in the wilderness, for protection.

Reportedly, this incident happened last year and was captured by a drone that may have been recording the bear. The rider in the video was unharmed. At the start of the video, there is another rider that stopped as he saw the incident unfold.

I don't believe these types of video's are 'real' anymore. Believe me, with computer modeling motion tracking and today's advanced filters even a basement type expert can make just about any--thing seem like the real thing. This likely a fake. I have worked in the video compositing industry in LA and you should see some of the stuff that the guys would come up with just for kicks around the office...all of it 'flawlessly' realistic beyond belief. Everything is fake today. Everything.

That bear was just running down the hill. I had a much closer encounter outside of Auburn. I’m rolling at 20 miles an hour down Yankee Jim’s Rd.when I see something just in my field of vision above me. This is a steep canyon road so the the side hill is near vertical. Damn bear was bombing down a 40 degree slope and hit the parallel ditch at the bottom and barrel rolled right in front of me while I was skidding with my rear brake locked up and my front brake nearly locked up.
Nearly crapped my shorts and had to stop and get my **** together, literally.

Lol, that sounds comically intense!

Not fake and not chasing the bike. The bear is running from the bike(s). If the bear was going for the biker then it would turn toward the bike. Bears do not know or understand switchbacks or flow trails. I live in Missoula MT and ride and hike in bear country all the time. If the bear was trying to get the biker it would have. I’m not sure why people think it is fake either. There are tons of bears both Black and Grizzlies in that area.
Oh yeah, don’t carry a knife (like the video says) and think you are going to fend off a bear, that is just stupid.

Without being able to interview the bear, I'm going with you and the other guy who believe the bear is just in flight mode, not bite mode. The bear doesn't understand the trail direction, and it's easier for a bear to run downhill. He doesn't realize he will intersect the rider again. I saw something similar near Rico, CO a few years ago on the Stoner Mesa singletrack on my dirt motorcycle. I flushed a black bear and he ran to my right downhill to get away. As I switchbacked shortly heading downhill I saw him again, still hauling butt downhill to get away. I can see that video being totally true with the exception of why the drone footage was occurring. However, I have a moto riding friend in ABQ, NM who is a master videographer with one of those high tech drones that follows him, so it could happen.

Looks like a dual slalom race to me...

Beer's got better suspension... far better progressivity.

Course doesn't look to be taped off... so - no harm, no foul.

Careful talking about what sort of protection to carry to protect against wild animals...

Does anybody else think the audio was computer generated? The voice sounds like half the robocalls I get. If that video was real, I don’t think the rider knew he was being chased.

This is the rarity that actually shows how freakishly abnormal it is for a bear to even run in the same direction of a biker.

Alaska Daily News had a great story talking about bikers literally colliding into bears who were just walking up trails minding their own business when a biker ran into them. Some pretty ugly details. Instead of nameless videos, this story names names and provides actual details of documented encounters.

TLDR is bring Bear spray, Bells, and Buddies to ride in Bear country. No BBQ.

"18 biker-bear incidents since 2000 ... in at least five of the 18 incidents, the cyclist actually broadsided the bear. "

Interesting and informative article, but the bear running down the hill in this case looks perfectly logical and is exactly what I experienced in CO that I mentioned above. Plus, the other biker coming down the trail behind the first rider is probably another motive for the bear to be running in the direction shown here. I don't think anyone would deny that under the right circumstances...mama bear with cubs...bear struck by cyclist...bear surprised in close proximity...etc...that a bear could or would attack the cyclist, but I don't think that's what we're seeing here in this case.

It's funny that they say it's wilderness because it looks exactly like Freebird trail at Whitefish bike park. I'm not going to wear a dumb knife in a bike park.

Just looks like a bear trying to get somewhere away from the riders and certainly not chasing them. IIRC several people have ran into black bears at the Chequamegon race, it's held right around bear hunting season when they are being chased around. I've narrowly missed a deer that jumped the path like that and about took me off my bike. I have also ran into and killed a jake turkey on my mountain bike. Whole lotta meh I guess.

Well if its any where near whitefish its at the ski hill as that's the only place sorta like that. I call BS though because the trees and grasses and brush don't look like here. Too, the black bears here by default run like hell away from people, Also in a town like this that would not stay a "secret" for more than 5 minutes

This looks like a bear running downhill where a trail just happens to intersect his path. It doesn't look like he's pursuing the biker at all. He just keeps going straight and doesn't veer toward the cyclist even when he's close to him. I'm calling bullshit on the interpretation of what's going on here.

Not what it looks like to me. Likely the drone or rider spooked the bear and it was simply trying to run away. It doesn't understand the bike trail is going to switch back across its path.
