How does it ride?

"I've cleaned more techy climbing sections, felt more confident on blind trails, and had more fun riding the Sentinel than many previous bikes. The Sentinel's climbing characteristics may require a bit of readjustment if you're not accustomed to Transition's geometry, but once you find the sweet spot, this bike will most certainly leave you satiated as you clean more technical bits than you have on any other bike."

Just got my new-to-me built up as well, complete with ehfour's outcast Lyrik [emoji23] Loving it except for the old DT wheelset I had lying around. Don't think I fully appreciated how much of a game-changer putting the WAO Union set on my other bike was until now. I'll have to blissfully avoid trying a ZEB or F38 for a while…

It's a little bit hard to see but are you running moto brakes there? It looks like you routed the hose across the down tube? I went back and forth on whether to do that or to go with the more messy hose routing at the bar. Do you have some more close up photos of how it looks?

any inmates have an alloy V2 Sent? the frame price difference is huge. i'm thinking of building one up. the platinum frame 'color', looks awesome, which i think is essentially raw. wondering what the overall weights are of these and any impressions. clearly the carbon frame is very light and makes an incredible very high end bike.

Finally rode my new sentinel. I installed a cascade link, and I haven't ridden the bike with the stock link. I built the bike up with a 160mm Lyrik Ultimate with a Vorsprung Secus.

The bike feels very light while pedaling and riding, but I don't think it's significantly lighter. I think the weight of the bike is a bit lower, and overall the suspension setup is very sensitive, and poppy which makes the bike feel light. It's really easy to push into the bike and bounce around the trail. The rear suspension feels like a v1 wreckoning to me, but the bike climbs significantly better than that bike.

Anyone rode the alloy one yet? How does it fair? A bit worried of the weight increase over a carbon one as it would be my only bike I need it to pedal all day

I’m guessing frame weight would be comparable to the new stumpy evo alloy (which I loved the cerbon one I had till it cracked)

i need to get back on a bike I can trust again sadly can’t get the evo as frame only in uk so I’m looking at a sentinel alloy as alternative to that I think they seem very similar bikes on paper and I absolutely loved the evo carbon it was a great fun all rounder

Sorry I can’t help with the actual question but if you would’ve been in the market for a carbon evo frame, why not the carbon sentinel? I know there are many reports of the stumpy cracking but not for the sentinel as far as I know. Plus the transition comes with a lifetime warranty so you have that piece of mind (availability aside).

Sounds fair enough!

I can tell you the geo and suspension are great, I can’t help with the question of weight but I’m sure you’d love the bike either way plus you’d be able to get raw alu which everyone knows is the coolest finish.

#528 ·
yep the reviews of the sentinel sound awesome as a aggressive trail bike, looks so similar to stumpy evo geo wise and I had a real blast on that so hopefully will feel the same

it’s just the weight really I’ve not had alloy for a long long time and really wondering if it will be that noticeable for riding all day

#531 ·
Ah great review and comparison, luckily I’ve got a decent spec build to swap over with lightish wheels, so it should be on the low end of the heavy lol

That’s not too bad at all for the extra weight, it seems the carbon version is quite weighty itself thanks for the info though that’s a great way to look at it as a direct comparison weight wise over the carbon one

I’m not sure 2.7lbs is overly noticeable in the grand scheme of it for a pretty fit person

My carbon XXL weighs about 36-37lbs once I put my water bottle, tool strap, etc. I think an alloy with lighter parts would be about the same, and I don’t notice it being “sluggish”

If I have missed this in the thread please forgive me. I did a quick search but nothing really came up. I am looking for ride review of V2 carbon sentinel with cascade link and 170mm fork. Thinking about this set up or new spire as my next bike.

This Ride Wrap stuff has a bit of a learning curve. Took me 2 hours to get the chainstay done. I think I got the hang of it now though. Any pointers on where to add MORE protection? Probably going to add more in the loam shelf area for obvious reasons

Haha... this brings back some memories. Same experience as you where it probably took 2+ hours for the first few pieces (was my first time installing a frame wrap). I had a tough time getting additional protection to the "loam shelf" so I just bought touch up paint.

I ended up with some additional measures near the drive side rear dropout. Also, I was getting some nice heel rub on the driveside chainstay. Started to peel off the wrap. I ended up wrapping the entire area with ridewrap's chainstay armor. Been very happy with it and as a bonus, helps dampen chain slap.

An XL Sential frame popped up locally here and it had me thinking that while the reach is long, the cockpit wouldn't be too bad for my height: 5'10.5, 34 inseam.

How are the 5'10-5'11 guys feeling on the large? It seems to me the top tube would make things a little cramped while climbing and getting around tight switchbacks. I know that's how I'm beginning to feel on my large Megatower, which has a slightly longer top tube. At 5'10.5, I'd be ready to try an XL Sentinel, put my 170mm Fox 38 on there and eventually get the cascade link.

I wish I knew my ape measurement but I am 6' on a large and the reach (or effective top tube) feels better to me than my Ripmo. Ripmo effective top tube was 632mm and the large Sentinel is 613 so the bars feel 19mm closer to me, which I prefer.

I am 5’9” with 32.5” inseam and a 6’2” wingspan (I know long arms and legs with a short torso) would a medium be a good fit? I am on a large on my XC bike so I worry that a medium will be pretty short…. Especially when they say they designed the bike around a 40mm stem….

Update from my previous post (#483/#461): Unfortunately due to parts shortage, this build is going real slow, but at least it will be ready for next season. Made a couple of changes to specs due to long lead times. Decided that this will be a vanity project now.

What's done:
Cockpit (got new brake lines so lengths are now long enough) and all the routing / mounts.
Drivetrain - missing wheelset for the rest

What's Left / waiting on shipment:
Wheels - changed to Nobl TR37s with Project 321 hubs (purple)
Drivetrain - changed from m5100 to AXS GX with XTR 12 speed (spare from gravel bike)
BetterBolts - they dont have purple so oil slick everything
Fork Decals
Switch Grade Seat adjustment
(maybe) Cascade North Fork Brakes.

Following your build. I love the frame, and had no idea what a cascade link was until you. That a costly but nice upgrade for sure. Get that bike built as soon as possible

I'm about 6wks deep on Sentinel v2 ownership and starting to re-think my decision to go XXL. While that extra reach/cockpit length felt pretty ideal during bike park season, it's proving a little too much for the majority of the trail riding I'm doing around here. Is anyone on this thread potentially trying to track down an XXL frame in Ti Grey? Assuming I can track down and pre-order an XL frame for next season I'll be putting this one on PB in the next few weeks.

Apart from the sizing dilemma, though, I'm amazed by how much difference the little tweaks Transition did to the v2 made for the bike overall. With the exact same shock/shock tune I was able to go down a spring rate and stay up in the travel way better. The added anti-squat also seems pretty notable, I'm so much more energized to pedal this bike on multiple back-to-back big climbs than I was with the v1. I do miss the Merlot, though!

A few here have mentioned being happy with a 1deg steepening of the HT angle using a Works set. I’ve been considering this for mine, as most days I find myself wanting the bike to feel a little sharper. Something to consider alongside alternate frame sizing, plus you could swap headsets appropriate to the season.

#549 ·
You raise a great point, I'm a big fan of the WC angle sets (have run them in pretty much every bike I've owned that has a ZS headset, at one point or another) and the Sentinel could be a great candidate for one. I've just never used it to steepen a head angle before... always to slacken.

I think for my everyday riding something that hews a little closer to Smuggler geometry would be ideal, but with Sentinel v2 progressivity and kinematics. +1-1.5deg. would get me in that range, especially with the 140mm short stroke shock option.

At that point, though, shouldn't I just be trying to buy an Optic ... ?! :ROFLMAO:
