The Perfect Girlfriend?

I think my son may have found her!

Aside from physical desireablity, my older son's girlfriend asked me yesterday if I would teach her to surf next season. This is a very good sign.

I mentioned mountain biking and she said, sure, I'd like to try that too. My son said he would drag his bike out just to see that.

She also expressed an interest in learning to ski (I've been an instructor for 18-years and my son is a former racer/instructor).

While my son doesn't give a hoot about sports, except that he particpated in them for years and was very good, I can talk baseball with the girlfriend and she actually knows all the details. She schooled herself in Formula One and World Rally Racing because my son is interested in that and she is anxious to go Scuba diving with him.

Pretty nice girlfriend, I'd say.

Oh, and she has a good job too and knows how to keep him in his place, no small feat.
;)

This thread is useless without pics.

In the last year, my girlfriend has gotten me to go on multi-day backpacking trips, canyoneering trips, Alpine & backcountry ski trips...

We're fixing to hit the White Rim sun-wed.

It's neat dating a girl you can do more than watch TV with.

I'm wary of women who try to pick up the hobbies their boyfriend is interested in. They almost always end up being "borrowed" hobbies and never become their own, and they stop doing them once the intended effect has been achieved. I am much, MUCH more down with a girl who is into and passionate about her own things.

Agreed. I wouldn't want a GF that rode as a passion. I like her to have her own thing and I have mine. I'm wary of a girl that tries to hard to fit in.

if he's happy - that is awesome.

Meh, don't sweat it. They're kids ... they're still figuring out what their hobbies and interests are. I got my own gf into cycling a few years ago and now she teaches me about a lot of things (she's the roadie scum expert, I'm more mountain and cyclocross).

Sad but true story.

My distant cousin - He was a ski instructor. LOVED skiing. Met a girl who got into skiing to spend more time with him. Eventually they got married.

So I'm sitting at dinner with them one night, and she starts telling us all this story about how she just got into skiing to keep him interested in her. As soon as they got married, she quit skiing and brow-beat him into moving somewhere else because she absolutely HATED the snow. She was laughing like this was some great joke about how she tricked him into marrying him and won in the end.

I don't think I have ever seen him look as sad as he did when she started laughing about that.

Very, very true.

My bike was stolen soon after my girlfriend (now wife) moved in with me. I went to replace it and thought it would be nice to get a bike for her as well. She was all for that idea and went to the shop with me. We both got entry level bikes, but the one I picked out for her was a few hundred dollars less than mine. Her response, "You can't spend more money on your bike, I want the same kind." Well 4 years later, there is less than 100 miles on her bike. :(

"....no small feat."

That would be the clincher for me, for sure. Of course, big feat bring there own problems, but folk with small feat often have trouble running in sand, so that'll be one less thing to think about when you take her surfing. Hopefully, her feat will be 'in proportion'.

What an evil btch! Thanx for reminding me why I'm still single. I'm 38 years old and can ride, kayak, climb and ski whenever I want(except when I have to work, of course). I would never trade that freedom for anything.

I think it's cool. I don't know how you guys can really judge her.. maybe she's just an active type of person who likes to try new things.

Even though my better half doesn't MTB because Sailing is her thing, she still wants to try it out some day when we're both less busy. She still listens to me rave on about choosing component X for my bike etc. which is really sweet when I know it must bore her. Best of all her response to me spending $$ on cycling is "Well, I can't really stop you can I? I know even if I said you shouldn't you will, so go buy it" :D

"Eat, sleep, breathe, think bikes at all times. A very understanding girlfriend is essential." Chris Hewings.

Ick! I hate hearing those stories :bluefrown:. What ever happened to trust, honesty, caring about your partner, and all that? On the flip side, I've tried or gotten more into several sports because of men that I wanted to spend more time with. The guys are now long gone, but I'm still really psyched about the sports !

This is seriously one of the more depressing threads I have ever read. We got a dad who sounds like he is more into his son's girlfriend that his son. We got guys who don't want their girlfriends to be interested in similar things or share passions, we got a dude who is so angry with women that he would rather be alone that in the company of one, I feel sorry for that poor bastard who married a woman he obviously knew nothing about, some dude wants his girlfriend to have a flat head..what does that even mean?? Good luck fellas.

While I wish my girlfriend shared my passion for mtn biking I know it is not going to happen. She calls my bike "the other woman" and will rub it in at times. At the same time she has come to accept that it is part of me and it is something I enjoy doing and it does make me happy so she does not get in the way.

Now trying to convince her I need another bike well I am still working on that one.

Sounds like he's met his match!

Good for them both, he might not give a hoot about sports, but meeting someone who shares a passion for things out of the mainstream is great! It also sounds like you and get along pretty well with her and vice-versa.

Despite the fact that this sort of thread always brings out the bitter men, I like the good news and positive vibe. Haven't had much of your ramblings in some time.
