Yeah that's a great post. Made me immediately pull the map up and start thinking about long rides to get me out of Philly. 42x16 is a good road gear around here as well.

Hello to all!

I want to buy Straggler frameset and i have some questions:

1. What real maximum size of tires are may be installed at bike?

2. I want to install rear derailler and i need to have this thing. As it is properly called? I have to buy it separately or is it included with the frameset?

@trolleybus
I was able to fit Schwalbe Big Apple 2.0's with about 1mm clearance on each side.
The tensioner screws come with the frame.

@trolleybus
Also depends on the rims...
I have the admittedly overkill Velocity Blunt 35s (change of plans=unfortunate compromise to keep the IGH) on mine and a Marathon Mondial and a Big Ben in 2.0 were too big for the rear. Plenty of room on the front for both though.

50-622 Big Ben tyres are 49mm high (from the rim) and 53 mm wide when inflated.

50-622 Mondial measures 52mm across on its 2nd day of pumping 70 psi.. height - approx - 52mm (=knarlier tread than the Bens)

Going narrower... A Mondial 47-622/28x1.75/45-700 (all different denominations of the same size) didn't fit in the rear with enough comfortable clearance. Only had about 3mm either side.

47-622 Mondial measured 47mm across the first day on… and after a few days 48mm - height on this day - 45mm approx

So I had to go down to a 40x700/42-622 Mondial.

These measure 40mm high (from the rim) and 44mm wide when inflated. They haven't been measured them since this initial measurement so maybe they've stretched another mm...? But enough clearance to feel safe...

Thanks for answers!

It's very sad, 'cause I want to use 29x2.1 tires, like Nokian Extreme 294 studs (as on this bike).

I read many reviews of CrossCheck, where it was mentioned that 29x2.0 tires can be used. I think, that Straggler has room for tires with width more than 2.0.

Maybe, someone can make photos of fork and rear triangle with ruler near?

Not in the rear triangle it doesn't. A slick 2.0 is the largest you'll be able to squeeze in the back, for sure. And better to use a skinnier rim - even then, if your wheel goes out of true, you'll be rubbing.

Panaracer 45mm firecross fits like a glove though, if you want to go nobby. A 45mm slick with fenders should fit nicely. As for studded tires, you should be ok with anything in the 38-45 range.

As for clearance pics, check back in this thread somewhere around page 25 or so (give or take a few pages) and I believe efuss has some pics posted.

^ Correct. I also have pics posted in this thread showing the razor tight fit my 2.0 slicks have.

It was so tight I got sick of the maintenance and put black 35mm tires on it.

Maybe go for a Fargo or something like that if you need 2"+ tires?

I didn't like my Fargo.....but I'm loving the straggler.....though I did worry if I'd have enough grip and comfort from the 700c wheels with the tracks I ride....they are really beat up here in England.

I do insist on full mudguards too, can't ride far wet and muddy so they take up room, look ugly but keep me cycling.

I love my Straggler, but right now it's still mixed emotions for me. I knew it would take a while to get the bike just right, seeing as I was ordering it, and all it's parts without a test ride.

All in all I already like it more for in city riding than the Soma. Smoother and more graceful handling. it already feels like the right bike for the job. Most of where I am having issues at this point is the too cheap wheels I bought for it. they were 99 bucks for a reason. the entire hub LEANS in turns, causing faint rubbing of the rotors against the calipers. And yes, those hubs are set up correctly. part of me wonders if it is not the skewers flexing, as the lean is very, very subtle (but annoying)

Other than that, once I nixed the drops it all started coming together. better wheels, hydraulic discs and some 38mm tires and this bike will be golden.

I am shocked that it weighs more than the old rockhopper and a LOT more than a Soma Groove, though.

Alright, QBP has my size in stock...going to order frameset on Monday...:)

now anyone care to recommend me a decent all around headset...?

I've got a Cane Creek 10 that is upgraded with a Cane Creek 40 crown race. all in all it makes for a reliable package until I can buy some bling.

to be fair I shoppe around and spent about 27 on the headset and 8 on the race. so I was only out the door about 35 bucks. much more than that and you could just buy a 40.
