I having trouble understanding the straggler geometry compared to the cross check. If the bb drop is greater than how does it have a longer top tube? I am looking at it as if one were to increase the bb drop on the cross check the size would go up and the top tube would the same. What am I missing?

That they made the top tube longer. It's not like they're using the exact same tubes from the CC for the Straggler...

 

Thanks for the replies. Why does Surly put 'regular' length stems (e.g. 100mm on 52-56) on the complete bikes? Also, what are some of the length stems that you guys are running?

 

I swapped a 100mm stem onto my 60cm bike.

 

If I put anything longer than 80mm on my size 56 Cross Checks, I feel all stretched out. That might be because I'm used to MTB flat bars, but still, the Surly top-tubes seem longer than other comparable bikes.

 

Quick question for you guys: is anyone else having problems with brake chatter on the front brake? I'm running TRP Spyres and my brakes shudder something fierce under moderate to heavy braking. The rotor is true and the pads seem to be aligned correctly. This has been an issue since day one. When I took it into my LBS that built the bike, I was told that road forks are going to chatter with a disc brake because of the forces involved. Thoughts/input? Would switching to a different fork help?

 

I have not had any issues with Avid BB7 and 160mm rotors.

 

SLX and 180mm rotor, no problems.

 

I am running a 90mm on my 52cm bike.

 

I have a 56 straggler, custom built. It has the stock fork, a Chris King headset, Avid BB7 road S brakes with 160 rotors (front and rear) on a set of Mavic C29ssmax wheels and I don't get a bit of shudder on mine.

 

Last time I had shudder issues was with my BB7's. It was a pad contamination issue. fresh pads and I was fine.

 

Well it seems like the stock fork isn't the issue, if none of you are having problems with brake chatter. I'm going to give it a thorough clean this weekend and I've ordered new pads as that is the cheapest solution. More info I didn't include in my original post: I'm using 160mm Deore rotors and my wheels are Velocity Ailerons laced to Shimano CX75 hubs.

LBS still thinks that the chatter is related to fork design. I generally trust my LBS as he rarely tries to upsell me, but I don't want to shell out for a new fork if it is clearly not the problem.

 

I would also recommend cleaning the rotor surface with automotive brake disc (rotor) cleaner. I find this really helps if done periodically. I also very much doubt it is anything to do with the fork.

Most recent evolution of my Straggler:

I joined the dark side and switched to drop bars. In order to do so, I had to swap out my hydraulic brakes to mechanical ones. Luckily my buddy had a pair laying around in his shop and hooked me up with these BB7 SL's for $50 a pop. So stoked. Since I am still running SS, I just picked up some SRAM S500 levers for now.

I think my next project is to try to convert it back to 1x10. I'll knock out the hubs, wheels, and tires last after tax refund hits my mailbox.

So far, I am liking the new set up. I thought I might be to stretched out with drops (90mm stem), but I don't at all.

 

Hi mate nice set up, how do you like the Brooks Cambium? I have one and compared to my b17s found it a little firm. Just picked up a Cambium c17 s and find it a lot softer.

 

I love my cambium, sometimes I feel like it's too forgiving. But I'm used to really unforgiving saddles. It's a nice change.

 

Picked up my rad purple Straggler at the shop this weekend. Was able to ride it for a good 15 mins before the rain started and turned to snow, ending in 13".

But it was a fun-ass 15 minutes and she looks great in my stand in the basement! Can't wait to get it out and put it through hell.

I also put some 120 tpi Knards on it, so it anyone is interested in a take off pair of 27tpi, shoot me a message.

 

Anyone have a Revelate Tangle bag on their Straggler? I am looking at the sizing and wondering if I should go with a large or medium. I have a 56cm and measuring it looks like I'm right in between. Anyone have actual dimensions and or pictures of the fit on theirs? Thanks in advance.

 

On my 60 cm I've got a large. Fits perfectly with no gapping and moderate tension on the strapping. Order both, try them out and return the one that doesn't work.

 

I ride a 54 with a medium tangle. It fits pretty good on the 54 but it's a hair on the big side. So on a 56 it might fit better

 

After reading that I'd say the medium would fit a 56 better

Thanks guys. I think I'd prefer going that route, although I would like the larger storage, it would fit my 18" Pugsley as well.

May just go ahead and order the gas tank to make up for the smaller bag. Boom.

Hello my friends. Considering a strange creation and would like your input. 1x1 fork with 26 RHs and a 26x3 knard on my Straggler. Thoughts for or against? Measurements seem like they won't change standover much?

Any thoughts appreciated.

 

I think that thing started life as a Cross Check, but close enough. The creator is a member here. I think I saw him posting about it in the "post a picture of your Surly" thread.
