Holy crap, this is what I've been waiting for. Basically a disc Cross Check? The rear dropouts are nutty!

This will replace my CC, 100%

I sware the unphotographability of their paint is like, intentional. every camera seems to see that color different!

I'm a bit curious on the ETA still too. not worried enough to bother my shop this minute. But I generally don't buy a new bike at new bike times... so I really don't know when to expect next years models. In car world the 2014s show up in june.

Yeah, And I see a yellow green shift in yours. It's kind of amusing. given how many colors Surly has put out that refuse to photograph evenly, I'd be willing to guess they do it on purpose.

All the past colors, Robins Egg, Beef Gravy and Hospital Foam look amazing. they photograph for crap. but IRL they're amazing. I'm really intrigued with what I will see when I open the box. Pale or deep tone? Reddish purple? Violetish? how sparkly?

All I know is the white stickers are coming off.

A guy that used to work at my LBS now works at QBP and he called the shop yesterday to update the owner, he said they should be shipping to shops in a week or two. I'm not holding my breath though. It's been unusually nice/dry/warm in MD this fall so I've been happy to ride my mountain bike, but when the straggler comes in it will be a good change of pace for the colder/wetter months.

Moving to Cali I didn't realize that they tax someone who makes 8.50 an hour 3 times as much as they do in Utah.

So I'm real poor now. So suddenly these delays aren't so bad for me. my paychecks are $400 less than I'm used to, and this gives me time to pay off the frame.

Yeah, there is a lot of really great... most things in Utah.

But I just couldn't stand the people. Or the fact that the work available there tends to be low paying and horrible.

but this taxation, the lack of public services being maintained. it's taking some getting used to.

Anyhoo. I've redone my budget and expect to have the straggler paid off by the end of november. then It sits there for december, than in January I build it up!

So wait, they aren't released still? Is it a big deal I saw one at one of my LBSes? It was next to their repair area but they always have a few Surlys there. Maybe a demo model since they are the HIP (but honestly really nice) LBS.

I have been fighting the urge to acquire one and anyhow have a 1x1 and used babbys first BMX on the list before a Straggler so I just said "huh, nice color... Ok bye" I came here to see who had a build up, especially burly SS commuter setup.

Did I just see a rare Purple Surly Sasquatch in captivity?

Anyone else notice how many sites have them priced at or above 625?

I'm sorry, but if it comes to that, my shop can get traitor, All City and even Raleigh (The tamland looks absolutely awesome!)

And all those bikes would be better deals for the money, respectively. part of what makes Surly awesome is that they build affordable bikes. The Macho Man disc is 625, and while being less versatile, it's a nicer bike.

We will see, though. when the real inventory is in place, what those prices will be.

I think we'll see when it gets in. As All City and Surly are both QBP brands, it's likely that both bikes are made in similar factories (they're both ED coated at least) just to different specs. The All City has a bunch of nice details like the hidden fender mounts, #sickheadbadge, replaceable derailleur hanger, CX pulley capability, and front derailleur barrel adjuster at the cable guide but the Straggler has some nice details in ability to fit a variety of different racks and run different drivetrain setups. I imagine when it comes down, both are probably going to be about the same quality just with different specs. The Macho Man Disc will make a better dedicated CX racer, the Straggler a better all-arounder.

Economies of scale might be at play here in that Surly has the ability to order more frames and bring the cost down with the same quality of frame. Sounds like the Straggler might be getting fancier tubing than a normal CrossCheck as well but that was just something I read a while back about Surly being a lot pickier about tubing choicing these days despite still using generic 4130.

Straggler frameset is $550, has been for a while. Some people might be marking it up based on demand but thats manufacturers suggested retail price.

I agree with you. On the differences. and in terms of the ride and how they'll last, I agree on quality. But admittedly, all those little details on the All-city you just mentioned take time. they take labor and tool investments. and they do indeed make it nicer (Not any more practical or reliable, just... nicer.) and that MSRP of $550 sits fine with me. though I may be sandblasting that ED coating off my bike, I appreciate it and the investment cast surly drop outs.

#441 ·
apparently the ED coating is also the color coat, so say the QBP birds. and several other people I've talked to about ED coatings. That they're more or less like powdercoats, but they're electrocuted on instead of baking.

I am by no means the expert in how QBP coats their frames, this is just what I've gathered through half hearted research.

I was pretty interested in the straggler upon first reading about it, but looking at other similar offerings coming out this year (most specifically the Raleigh Tamland that was mentioned uses a 105 drivetrain and comes in at $1600), can anyone offer a reason for the pricepoint for the complete build being so seemingly high considering the components that you get?

#446 ·
The ED coating is all over the tubes, they dip the whole frame in a bath of the stuff and electro charge it. So inside, outside, everywhere. My Nature Boy is ED dipped and when my lovely(bonehead) hubby was "helping" me flip flop my rear wheel on my NB, he bashed one of my dropouts with the axle and the white paint chipped.....black underneath as it is ED coated:) Sortof made me wonder if you could take the paint topcoat off(not that I am planning to, I like my purple & white All City) and just have an ED black bike? Or when you do strip it, like Agwan is planning on doing, if it also strips off the outside ED coating? Dunno....

Anyways, on Surly's FB, they posted the above "Straggler as touring..." page and I commented "Can you get a Straggler?" as a reply, more joking than anything since you can't really do ANYTHING on a Straggler right now since there are none to be found and they said "soonish, we promise, like a few weeks, which with Surly usually means May...."

Lol! Hey, they are trying:) Things happen, hopefully it'll all be good soon and we'll start seeing build pics on here.

If you're ever in Atlanta, I'll let you ride my 64cm Straggler as soon as they get in. I'm 6'9" and beyond stoked that Surly is making this bike to cover the really tall and really short riders.

Agwan, nice pics. Front fork clearance looks huge with the Knard in there. Definitely going to try cramming something wider in like a 700x50/small volume 29er tire.

42mm tires on my current bike are a ton of fun and just enough cushion for the smoother trails, they just threw the geometry off enough to where I preferred riding smaller 35mm tires and dealing with the lower volume. I pretty much save the 42mm tires for gravel rides where there isnt much steep climbing or tight turns.

I saw one today! Well two, technically, but one was boring black.

There are a pair of the demo bikes at the Philly bike expo (on 11/10 also for anybody local who wants to take a look). I didn't bother with a picture since a) I forgot and b) I only had my phone on me and wouldn't have taken anything better than what's already around. Inside, under fl. lights, the color is definitely closer to the blue/lavender than some of the bright/redder purple in some of the photos (like the two on the top of this page). I think this one from Surly is pretty close to what it really looked like:

I didn't really bug the guy about a firm date (he worked for the "distributor," so I assume QBP, but didn't clarify), but sometime in the next couple weeks was what he threw out there.

I have a 54 on order, a set of brakes/wheels sitting around waiting for the frame, and going to move everything else over from my crosscheck. Excited, but doing my best to be patient...
