hi all,
im struggling to find the right size chisel for me, maybe you can assist me ;-)….

currently i ride a canyon roadlite which is sort of a gravel bike / roadbike geo with flat bars and 28mm tires. its xl sized. i am 6.2 tall and it suits well so i would take it as a starting point geometry wise.

want to add a nice hardtailso lets look at the chisel geos and theres the point i struggle to decide between large and xl …. can you see based on the geo chart what could be more suitable for me ?
would be a greaaaaaat help mates 👍

I wouldn’t compare the Roadlite geometry to the Chisel- 2 totally different styles/categories of bike.

I assume “6.2” means 6 ft 2in? If so, I think you’re solidly an XL for the Chisel. I’m about the same height and have ridden L and XL in both the Chisel and Epic HT (same geo). The large definitely needed a longer stem to avoid feeling cramped and I had a TON of seatpost exposed, creating a pretty aggressive saddle to bar drop. I suppose it comes down to preference, but I strongly prefer my XL Epic HT with a 70mm stem and higher stack.

If you can’t test ride both sizes of Chisel, I’d try to find a similar XC hardtail to test ride and then compare that geo to the Chisel.

6'2" here and wouldn't even consider an L/S4 for my next bike. Too cramped of reach for me and I'm mostly XC riding with some technical mixed in. I recently went to a bike shop to do some size research. I did a measurement on my 2014 Stumpy Elite Large with a longer stem. It was about 28" from the bar center to the seat post top center. I think the same measurement on the 2022 Stumpy XL/S5 was like 26" with stock stem. So even with the XL/S5 I might need a longer stem. No way I'd want to go down 2" in reach. It will be XL/S5 and maybe I'll first try the stock stem. The guy that fitted my 2014 said I looked cramped so he added the longer stem. Next time I'll just get the bigger bike. The smaller size would be for doing tight maneuvering or stunts/tricks/jumps. That's not me.

Buy the Cragger and sell the frame. Put all the parts on a Sour Crumble XL.
CRUMBLE - Sour Bicycles Sour Bicycles

And because you've got the full build kit from the Cragger, you'll have many options. Includind the near perfect for you Ibis DV9 gen 2.

Sweet compliant ride. Miles better than a Chisel.

Since you're possibly able to go for something more current and capable than a Chisel, consider going for a build aimed at lightweight compliance.

Thanks for the Chisel's sizing thread! I'm in the same boat - between L and XL on the dot...

I'm 186cm (or 6' 1.25") tall, "Ape factor" is 1.025, so I'm leaning towards the XL but still not convinced.

The other concern - standover at ~85cm, my inseam is about the same, so it looks like it may be very close and potentially painful

Have an ancient 2009 Giant Alias 26er in XL that feels ok but in no way this could be a reference point.

Got the XL - coming from the "old school" geo, the Chisel doesn't feel overly "long" - however, turning 45deg requires a bit of stretch.

Moved the seat forward a little, and now considering a 50mm stem - from 70mm standard.

It could well be that I'm still used to sitting more upright. Would lowering the stem help with this "transition"? Handles CTR and seat height ended up on the same level for me.

Did I get the right frame size? TIA!

You got the right size. You look big on the bike and it's an XL? As you mentioned there's a lot of adjustment using the seat rails and bar stem. You could change your reach by inches. I ride on very hilly terrain so I spend a lot of time hunched down and seated while climbing.
