Hi again!

Any body here using the m8100 crankset for 1x12? I was wondering if the chainring it came with has an offset? I want to purchase a lighter chainring but cant decide if I need 0mm or 3mm offset for the chisel 2021 model. I measured the chain stay clearance at about 6.5mm with the m8100 crankset with a 34t chain ring. Oh and I'm using the m8100 10-51 cassette. Chain doesn't drop when I back pedal on the 51t.

Has anyone ran a 120mm fork and a 1 deg slacker wolf tooth geoshift headset on their 2021+ chisel? I am thinking about going for more of a trail hard tail and considering either selling chisel frame and going to fuse or slacking out the chisel. The 120 fork and geoshift would make chisel around 66 HTA, which might be pushing the frame limits.

Yeah that might be pushing it a little. Tons of people have run 120mm with success by that geoadjust set may be a bridge too far. I wouldn’t really be that worried about the head tube but the seat stays chainstays and dropouts on this bike are kind of spindly to be doing anything too crazy. A fuse or the new Roscoe would probably be more up that ally.

Welp, my Chisel is off to its new owner. 😭

I got an Epic Evo to replace it, though I'm sure I'm going to miss the Chisel. Such a good bike, I think I'm going to end up with another chisel at some point, but for now I've got to thin the herd and rebuild some funds after buying the Epic.

Honestly, the SID 120 is a disappointing fork. Its very stiff in torsion and bending but there's too much compression damping and the negative chamber is too small so it has zero small bump compliance. Also, I never used full travel on it ever. In addition, I never really liked the Chisel at 120mm, I thought it made the front end feel eversoslightly better, but I didn't like how it made the STA slacker and it made climbing worse. Once I bought the 100mm air spring and swapped it onto the SID, I thought the Chisel geometry really shined. I never got full travel out of it with it set at 100mm either, though.

Isn't "I never got full travel out of it" a sign that you're running too much pressure?

I don't love the Sid, but it does fit with the Chisel being an XC bike. Fork does tend to sit higher in the travel when stock, but after adding a few spacers it's happier to move deeper into its travel. Doesn't feel as plush as my Fox 34 Rhythm fork but I think that may be expected.

I did have to send my Sid back for warranty, though. There was just so much stiction early in the fork's travel and it would hurt my hands after a few hours. It's still not quite as smooth as my Fox 34, but it's much better than it was.

I have no idea how the Reba feels...not sure if you're unhappy with something about it, or if you're just itching for an upgrade.

I can go 40% sag and 15psi under the recommendation and still never use all the travel. It defies physics, I just don't get it.

So running a ton of sag actually helped with my hands hurting, but my hands hurt too when I ran the recommended pressure. Is that a sign that the fork is bad or that its just poorly tuned from the factory?

Definitely XL. I'm 6'2" and I had a L, and it was just a smidge small.

For 120mm the new mattoc pro can be considered in the under 1.8kg range with super trick damper and irt spring

I'm perfectly happy with my 120mm r7 pro at 1.65kg. but it needs to be modded to increase the negative chamber volume. And a replacement model is imminent.

Rockshox is not the only suspension manufacturer out there. Though the new Sid seems to boast a more linear air spring with increased negative air volume and better bushing overlap.

My Sid sl had nice small bump sensitivity but just didn't feel nice when the bumps got bigger and I had to send it in for lower leg play which took months to replace.

@msrothwe adding volume spacers will help a lot with hand pain, and also with small bump compliance. If your hands felt better when running more sag then I'd definitely add some volume spacers. I believe the Sid takes 3 spacers total. Back before I had my fork warrantied I was running two spacers and it did help quite a bit. I think now I'm running one.

But it's also possible your fork has the same issue as mine. Try standing up on the pedals and slowly rocking forward. When you do this you end up putting a bunch of weight on the handlebars, which should push the fork into its travel. In my case this was not happening. I could put a LOT of my weight on the handlebars and the fork wouldn't really move. Something must have been too tight, or was binding, or whatever. If you have the same issue it might be worth trying to get it warrantied, if possible. But maybe try adding some spacers first and see how that goes. If that fixes it for you then awesome.

Hi all,

I'm having the same problem as several guys from here with a clicking noise coming from the alloy split crown on my new Specialized Chisel 2023.
The bike was build with a Fox 34 2023 SC 100mm.

I want to change this crown with something better from Cane Creek 110-Series ... but I don't have any idea which one will work.

Could someone please give some advice ?

Many thanks,

Dude it looks great! That frameset is definitely one of the best looking ones I've owned.

Finally gotten round to posting photos of my final build which was completed in the May time-frame. This bike compliments my 29er YT Jeffsey and it is super fun on flowy and techy single track. Absolutely love it and the ride quality is insane - I have owned several carbon hardtails and this beats them all.

Highlights:
Specialized Chisel Limited Edition Fire (w/protective wrap)
Fox 32 StepCast Factory fork 100mm
Hunt XC Wide 29er wheels
Vittoria Barzo (front) and Mezcal (rear) - trail version with Vittoria Air Liner tire inserts
SRAM 11 Speed XX1 Shifters, derailleur, 11-44 cassette and X1 carbon cranks
Shimano SLX brakes
35mm Burgtec Enduro Mk3 stem with RaceFace carbon bar (35)
Shimano XT Pedals
Specialized Roval control carbon seatpost with Specialized Power Expert Saddle
Fidlock water bottle mount

Weight 23lbs.

Nice bike, enjoy it !
One question --- did you noticed any noise coming from the alloy split crown ? Or did you swapped it with a non-split one ?

Crown race questions: Getting a chisel in the next couple days and will be swapping out the judy for a sid fork. Will i be able to reuse the crown race off the judy or do i need a new one? If not what crown race do i need to get? Having a hard time finding info on the headset it uses. Thanks!

Bought the frame earlier in the year & never got around to building it, finally got it together & have been ripping on it this week.

Mostly a spare parts build:
  • Chisel frame - Medium (purchased second hand, previous owner never used it); Ride-Wrapped it (Gloss)
  • Sid Select+ 120mm (purchased second hand)
  • GX 12spd drivetrain, 10-50t, 175mm cranks (new take-off)
  • RaceFace Turbine stem/bars (new take-off)
  • PNW grips (parts bin)
  • Deore 4-pots (parts bin)
  • Specialized Phenom saddle (freebie from a friend)
  • DT Swiss M1900 w/ 370 hubs (new take-offs). Added the 54T ratchet; sound clip: DT Swiss 370 with 54t ratchet
  • Vittoria Barzo/Mezcal XC-Race 29x2.35's (parts bin)
  • Wolftooth dropper lever (parts bin)
  • RaceFace Aeffect R dropper (Had to be a new one because the used dropper I had was sticking).
Weighed in at 27.5 lbs as you see it. Not the lightest, but not bad considering I used what parts I had. This thing really eats up singletrack & is a ton of fun. I was thinking about picking up a gravel bike, but may just use this & throw a larger chainring on.

Those are 30mm ID rims, right? I am curious how they feel with 2.35s (which incidentally the stock tires are). Also, did the wheels come with the 36T ratchet or the 18T ratchet?
