The front trigger can operate either direction, thumb or forefinger. You can click that one both ways to shift.

LOVE the 2 way front trigger on Shimano XT shifters. So much so that I have them on both my bikes and the bikes both have SRAM 12 speed Eagle drive trains.
Got the stink eye from a local mechanic that recently looked at my bike... he didn't approve.

 

I have a 12 speed SLX Shimano shifter and had forgotten about the index finger option until another rider mentioned it recently. I switched over to index finger for downshifting and love it. My wrist barely has to move. I find it much smoother & easer.

 

Actually you can't downshift with the index finger trigger. Only upshift.

The trigger works great in both directions, thumb or index finger.
I was not aware of that, but now that I do I really like it.

I was somewhat surprised after riding it for years that I could upshift a couple of gears at a time with the thumb push. I had ridden the pull trigger for so many decades that it didn't occur to me.

 

Top arrow points to downshift lever.
Bottom arrow points to upshift lever.
