I've never owned a bike with a brifter. I've never owned a bike SRAM. Now I'm looking at two bikes, one has Shimano Sora, the other has SRAM Apex. I'm not sure which very different brifter I want to use for the next ten years.

Sora has two levers per derailleur, one that shifts up and another that shifts down. The brake lever moves the derailleur towards the largest gear.

Apex has one shift lever per derailleur that moves the chain up and down the gears. The brake lever is dedicated to braking.

Anyone have experiences or preferences that may help me decide?

I hate double tap, but sora is like two steps down from Apex quality wise. Plus Sora uses the older hood shape, which I never cared for, and I find the Apex more comfortable.

If price is the same I'd get the Apex, just because it is higher quality, but at the same level I'd take Shimano any day.
