Hey all. Please pardon my ig-no-rance here. Im trying to do plenty of research and keep the stupid questions to a minimum, but today I cannot help myself.

I need to replace my rear hub baaaadly, so I figure Ill just do both front and rear at the same time. I keep finding more and more hubs that are built for disk brake usage.

Now I am perfectly happy with my crummy already paid for rim brakes that do a very fine job of stopping my bike, but you never know, I may run out of excuses to spend money and decide that I need disks.

Until then If I decided to go ahead and buy hubs set up for disk brakes can I just run them without a disk? Aside from looking all tackey and dumb with my hubs having extra nubs and holes doing nothing is there any disadvantage to buying disk brake hubs and ignoring the disk brake part?

I can't think of any reason, but im new at this whole rebuilding your bike thing and I would like to only buy hubs once. :madman:

Thanks for your help!

no problem. You can use disc hubs with rim-brake rims. You can even buy wheelsets that way. The only issue is you end up with a slightly heavier wheel because disc hubs weigh more the non-disc hubs and rim-brake rims weigh more than disc rims.

you would have to get rims that accept rim brakes. So you are limiting yourself to some pre-built wheel that has a rim that can take a rim brake with the disk hub or having something built (money).

You would be gaining unncessary weight by doing this. you could just get some BB7s from pricepoint for about a hundred dollars and be done with it.

Something to consider:

If you want to do this on the cheap then re-lacing your wheels with new hubs (disc or otherwise) may not be a cost effective vs. buying new, pre-built wheels altogether.

Then, one day when you decide to make use of those disc hubs you paid for, you'll be in the same boat all over again only this time in need of disc wheels.

I'd think about just getting a disc wheelset now, if you think that's the route you will eventually go. Then get some BB7's (if you want cheap/good brakes) and put the old wheelset on Ebay or CL for a few bucks. You will likely save a lot of money and hassle in the long run.

that's exactly what I'm doing now.. how much you think I can get for my stock rim-brake wheelset out of '09 Trek 4500? They're like-new condition..

Why don't you just sell them to the opening poster, Detri Mental?
OP wants disc hubs. Or are you saying his stock rims are disc? Anyhow he stated they were rim brake compatible so I don't know.

Luckie8, I have no idea. Ebay is a crapshoot and the riding season is coming to a close for many folks around the U.S. so demand will decrease till spring. But still.......someone might pay more than retail, I'll never understand Ebay...

Personally I'd put them on CL and hope to get 50 bucks, that might be a stretch depending on your location.

what about getting something like this for the OP?

http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/12...DD2-3-Parts-75-Wheelsets/Shimano-Deore-Disc-Wheelset-w_-Sun-Rhyno-Lite-Rims.htm

keep ur rim brakes and upgrade to disc later.

the rims have good reviews.
good wheels, been riding them for 4 months or so, bomb proof if you ask my friends about them. The Sidewall its self was kind of bad as a V-brake surface. It is very smooth compared to V-brake specific wheels. Forget stopping quickly with V-brakes and these rims in the wet and they let out a wicked screeching noise like disc brakes like to do some times.

hey.. that's not a bad idea lol..
OP, lemme know if you need a set of rim-brake wheels ok? I got a set of stock wheelset came from '09 Trek 4500 in like-new condition
Ok...one more time.

The OP stated in his post he already has rim brake compatible wheels. Am I the only one who read that?

BB-7s are good brakes, but they're not light. It makes no sense to mention saving weight by using disc rims when you're using heavy brakes and a heavier hub. Many weight weenies keep using v brakes for this very reason.

The Rhyno Lites are good rims, cheap and durable, but heavy. I've been using mine laced to XT hubs for a year and a half and they're still true. The wrench at the shop said he had to go over them pretty good though and might as well have hand-built them, they weren't tensioned right in the factory. The hub engages so-so, it's far from a premium hub, but they're cheap and fairly easy to rebuild.
