So I just built up a new (to me) 2005 titus motolite with the narrow chainstays that will be used as a 5x5 trailbike and for some adventure racing. I live and ride in Phoenix, AZ (near trail 100) and have been using the 2.4 WTB mutanoraptor and have been very happy with the tire...big volume so softens the many loose rocks on the trail, yet hooks up well in dry, dusty phoenix. I've also been pleasantly suprised with low rolling resistance, especially when road riding to/from the trailhead.
What I'm looking for is a replacement in a 2.1 size. Obviously WTB doesn't make the mutanoraptor in a 2.1 and from Shiggy's site it looks like the footprint of the 2.24 mutanoraptor is actually a hair larger than the 2.4 (don't know what's up with that). So now I'm forced to widen my search.
What I'm looking for is a 2.1 that has a similar feel the 2.4 mutanoraptor. Specifically I'm looking for something that rolls well yet still hooks up well (especially for climbing). Since I'm probably already being unrealistic in my requests, might as well add that ideally I'd like a tire that weighs in under 600g.
Been looking at some of the other WTB offerings and the wierwolf looks promising. I've also ridden and liked the conti survival (too big but could run the explorer) but am concerned about hardpack/pavement rolling resistance. Have also heard good things about the performance of the Kenda Nevgal but again, looking at tread, am concerned about rolling resistance.
Anybody with expereince with these tires? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
