I'd love to hear any comparisons between the Switchblade and the 429T (pedaling efficiency/snappiness, fit/sizing, and general riding comparisons). I've got a Large 429T right now, and while i'm perfectly happy with the travel, i would definitely change some of the geo numbers if I could. The reach is just way too small, and the front center is a bit short. I also have an Evil Wreckoning, also a large frame. The 429T feels tiny after being on the Wreck, and it feels like the smallest fore/aft movements on the 429T quickly shift you from "in the bike" to hanging over the front or off the back when riding off the saddle.

Yeah BB height is an issue. You can't raise the rear and steepen it, if you could you could Run a 160 fork with the HS spacer and one of the big 2.4-2.5 tires. The DHF 2.5 is really a huge tire. I have one in 29 and its 29.5" diameter. I'd just ditch the b+ and run 29er. I'm sure if you had a bunch of slickrock out your door the larger width b+ tire would smear that stuff much better. For most though the 29er is better for hard charging.
Stop fretting about BB height,it is not so much an issue. I ride in some of the most rocky tombstones, baby heads, extended rock gardens, etc. In four days of riding one slight hit my fault, pedal awareness is an art anyone can achieve with due diligence.

I can avoid pedal strikes as well, but when the terrain we ride requires that to become a focus of the ride it's silly when a BB can be a little bit higher and not have to deal with that PITA.

I was riding with a friend on his 29/27+ bike yesterday and asking him if he was sticking to 27+. His reply was no the pedal strikes were too much hassle and the bike rides great with 2.4" 29er rubber. He's a strong/experienced rider. He can make it through tech by ratcheting, but like me doesn't see the point when our trails are so dense with features.

Well each to his own,the choice is yours. I prefer lower vs higher BB because damn I love railing turns and the Switchback is one fine railer!

Dude I don't fret about BB height. I ride my Following in low with a 120mm fork and sub 13"' BB height in plenty chunky terrain. I know how to stutter pedal through chunk, that's one of the reasons why I was an early adopter of I9. I ride 170 cranks and am fairly light on my bike. This is not always the case and if you're not used to a low BB height it can certainly be an issues. Loosing .75" of tire height front and rear from 29 to b+ is a big deal. I'm not sold on b+ and that's the real issue here.

I know that. Started biking in PA over 25 years ago. The BB on my 27.5 SB is lower that my 429T. There is a learning curve going from one bike to another. I see you're a Reading boy. I haven't been to Mt. Gretna in years. My mission is to get to know Michaux this summer. Wish me luck.

What bottle cage is that if you don't mind me asking? : )

That is a Specialized side entry carbon cage. Side entry is key for these very tight fits. The bottom of the bottle hits the seat tube. The cage is tilted up with a washer on the top bolt to avoid the bottle top from hitting the down tube.

The rear shock can be flipped by removing the forward bolt and twisting the can to put the knobs on top. But the knobs will be in the reverse direction and the rebound knob will be harder to access.

There's different heights of 'small' water bottles. That Camelbak 21 oz Podium bottle fits perfect without having to flip the shock.

I thought it was, hard to tell for sure though from the pic, thank you for confirming that! Liked the way it allowed the bottle to sit as far down as possible, currently using the podium 21oz but very tight fit and not in a side load cage. This will be perfect!

@fc, Have you tried the water bottle mount on the bottom of the frame? Curious if you can fit a large bottle there on a small frame without hitting the front tire when the shock compresses?
Uggggh... water bottle mount under frame don't count. :)

I'll do it for you my friend and take a photo.

p.s. I'm 5'8" and riding a small frame and it fits good with the seat pushed slightly back on the rails. I know why they put me on a Small.... the Medium is huge and it's as long as many Large frames. It affects wheelbase and all that.

Thanks! I am slightly worried about the sizing. I'm 5'6" (at best) and have always ridden small frames, but the cool kids all say longer is better, right? :)

I guess I could go XS, but I'd really like to use that second water bottle mount. Curious to know if it's good for anything before I let it sway my decision...

You're small size frame. This will allow you to fit well with a 50mm stem or shorter. The XS size is a radically different frame where the shock is almost in the top tube.

FC, with your riding level and the fact that you test so many bikes, I'd have figured you'd know better than making a bike fit by sliding the saddle back ;) Seriously, do you not have all your fit measurements written down and then use them to set up each bike you get to test?

Also curious what travel fork that is you're running as you seem to be leaving the external cup in for both wheel sizes, as well as using the same fork?
Won't say the sizing is huge to me, just now getting to where it should be compared to Pivot's other stuff and the rest of the market - love the look and idea of the 429 TRAIL, but Reach on an XL is actually less than on my current Large Phantom.

I pushed the saddle back 7 mm. It's fine.

Fork travel is 150mm. The 15 mm cup is in the frame and that's supposed to be for Plus wheel use ideally to raise the bb.

For 29er, I've used it both ways, with and without the cup and the bike rides very well with it since I like the half a degree slacker angle.

However, after I come back home from Downieville, I'll take the cup out and try that low bb here in Santa Cruz. The bb in Plus mode will be exactly 13 inches.

For wheel swappers, cup swapping will probably not be done each time.
