What is the status of the trails at GB State Forest? I tried to ride there several years ago but the trails seemed more suited to hiking?I have friends that live in Lewisburg and I would be great to not have to drive to Douthat or Beckley to ride.

 

You are better off driving ten miles down the road to Gambrill State Park/Frederick Watershed. There's so many more trails and they hold up better to moisture. I'm planning a ride there tomorrow at 10am. If your interested in joining us send me a PM.

 

GB state forest is awesome. I'm new to the area but they have a 7 mile course that is just awesome. Nothing too technical, a couple of logs and 4 switch backs that challenge, but nothing too major. About 800 feet of climbing and then a gradual DH to the finish. I think it's a lot of fun. Let me know if you're in the area and I'll show you around.

I see from your profile that you have a single speed. Good deal. I will bring both bikes if I come at thanksgiving. I have a Trek 69er SS and a Gary Fisher FS multispeed.

 

I need to update my profile then, I gave the SS away years ago. I am now riding a frankenbike 69er I put together last winter. I would bring the Gary Fisher, 900+ feet of climbing in 7 miles is a lot on a SS.

I second this. The quality of trails in Gambrill and the Watershed are much, much better. Add to that the small amount of mileage at GB and it makes the extra drive well worth it.

Whoops, didn't notice that (WV) in the title thread

How many miles of trail down there? I assume this is in the area of the Greenbrier River trail

 

This park is located at the Southernmost end of the Greenbriar River Trail. It is also close to the 4 star Greenbriar Hotel, they claim to have Bike trails there also, but what I have ridden is generally Fire or Lumber company roads. This area is close enough to Douthat and the Slatyfork trails that probably prevents a real desire for trails to be added here.

 

Links and Big Al. I've always wanted to check those trails out, but never have. Pretty mountainous country there. My Ex's folks were from Caldwell, so I wandered that area some in my pre-MTB days. Side note - I think they allow hunting in the Greenbriar State Forest, Links might know the status on that.

Slatyfork ! Oh yeah ! More riding in that area than you can cover in a 4 day visit. :thumbsup:
Nothing wrong with Douthat either, I'm just partial to the Slatyfork/GauleyMtn./Cranberry area.

Yep, all State Forests and National Forests. Some of the State Forests have safety zones however you shouldn't need to worry about much till the 23rd of November in WV. That begins at least a month of various Deer Gun seasons. Bear Season in several of the WV counties is from Dec. 7th through the 31st. Definately where bright colors if you
dare venture into the woods during these time periods.
