I ordered this chain and I was wonder how much could it be shortened? Does it come right out of the box at the optimal length? I would imagine that all bikes are different so it wouldn't come ready to go but you never know. I want to make it as light as possible by removing unneeded links.

usually chains come in 116 links lenght. and then you have to remove a couple...

if weight was your concern why didn't you get the X10SL then?? it is about 17g lighter ...usually around 225g only cut to lenght.
shown below 116 links of:
KMX X9SL
KMC X10SL

I did consider the X10 but every time I searched on this forum or on WW at least a few people complained about the chain snapping. I know you and a few others have had no problems with them but I'd rather just play it safe so I got the 9.

I run 106 links with 11-32 cassette and 108 links with 11-34. You have to measure on the bike for proper fit. I think you put the chain around the big chainring, and the biggest cog in the back, add 2 links and cut there (not going through the rear derailleur).

Unfortunately I don't have the adequate tools to shorten and install the chain so I'm having my LBS do it.

Do you have the weights of both the 106 and 108 length chains?

A chain breaker is one of the most basic and important tools to have. You should have one with you on all your long rides. Learn how to use it on a old chain and be prepared:)
