Hydrocut Average Speed

There are a few regulars on this forum that ride the Hydrocut in Kitchener ... just curious what a "reasonable" average speed is for riding the entire trail (not including the doubletrack) with all it has to offer. I am referring to both east and west sections in their entirety, rocks, logs, bridges, Kamikaze the hard way, etc ... you get the idea. How about a "fast" average speed?

Thanks.

I usually end up with an average speed between 16 and 16.5km/h when I do the whole 'cut. Usually around 1:30 to complete everything. I have done it quicker, but that's my usual pace, that isn't quite a kill myself pace.

I run a similar pace to doozerdave, but I'm usually riding with him. :p

16 - 16.5km/h will leave more people winded and tired than it will leave still feeling refreshed. There are folks that can ride the hydrocut a helluva lot faster than that and not be too tired afterwards.

It really depends on your personal fitness level, skill level and familiarity with the trails. It helps to know where you can afford to push harder because you have a nice "rolling break" section coming up to use as recovery.

I suppose you could say that a "fast average speed" would be in the range of 17.5km/h, You'd still get passed by some riders but you'd be doing the majority of the passing. (this assumes you are going to ride the whole system without stops) Be sure not to omit Adams Run from the itinerary, it's often tempting to skip it by the time you just finished climbing kreepy and bootleg!

If you are planning on blasting all the singletrack with a break after each blast, you could no doubt push that quite a bit.

Cheers,

Wow ... you guys must have scared everyone else off from posting ... that's pretty fast for an average speed! I would have thought 14 -14.5 km/h to be not a fast, but a quite decent average speed. Now I'm too embarrassed to post my average speed. Well, maybe the 3rd time I go there I will improve greatly!

14-14.5 isn't slow by any means. With what Jeff was saying about breaks and rolling breaks, you can help or hurt your average. If you blast a few sections really fast and then come to a quick stop for a stopped break, then go fast again, you'll get a very high average. If you take a slow rolling break you would bring your average back down.

The 16-16.5 what we were talking about is doing the whole 'cut without stopping, so there are some rolling breaks in there. The Highland side has a lot more climbing and tends to bring the average down, but then when you head down Monkey Boy and Back 40 to the Glasgow side you're able to top about 40km/h at one spot and maintain something like 20+ for quite a while, which brings the average back up a bit.

You've only been there twice?? Don't worry about your speed then. Knowing the trail flow makes a huge difference. We should hook up some time and see what we can do. ;)

I do between 14-15km/hr, and am done in about an hour and a half, you buggers are pretty quick
We're not always that quick. That's usually if we ride solo or go in with just the two of us, maybe a third. The big group rides get pretty broken up with the ride-wait-socialize cycles. :)

...or if the trails aren't in the best of shape. ;) This morning it wasn't TOO bad, it has been way worse. No big puddles on the Glasgow side. A little slick in spots, but manageable. I did only the Glasgow side, up the Scrambler and back down Monkey Boy and Back 40, then the normal non-BBQ Run exit. 13km, 15.1km/h average. For the Glasgow side, that's kind of mediocre. I wasn't going nearly as fast as normal due to the wet leaves, and more so the humidity! My God it was muggy in there! I just couldn't breathe well enough to recover fully. Sweating like mad too.

Well guys , I am doing the Fri's off thing again :p
We haven't had you guys down to ride Fanshawe yet .
I'll see if I can sneak a Friday off soon. I've been meaning to get to London (really, I have!) to ride Fanbelt this year. Maybe the 26th if that works for you. Let me know :)

a little slick

Yup, was a little slick in this morning. dabbed on second log pile in and on the top of kamikaze's rocky uphill, still not to bad for traction, second lap rpund was much faster and cleaned everything. ripping it up on the singlespeed. Lot's of riders out too.

Don't think I can skip friday to go there though, would be nice i bet.
Later.

Hey VernDog, I saw your truck when I was leaving. Didn't notice the decals when I got there or I would have said Hi. I pulled in right in front of you in a Mazda 3.

Yeah, the log piles were a little sketchy today. Hopefully this isn't the start of mud season... the forecast doesn't look that great for trail drying this week.
