I'm trying to check the derailleur, not the shifter.

 

 

X9 is 9 speed or 10 speed if it says 1:1 exact actuation ratio

 

So it will work for either? I though you could use 9 speed derailleurs on 8 and 7 speed (and have done so successfully) but 10 speed was incompatible?

 

9 and 10 are exact actuation and therefore compatible. Just change the shifter.

There's a well known article from an Art's cyclery blog that claims 1:1 is very different from exact actuation (1.1 vs 1.3 pull ratio). Looks like Art's may have it wrong. Anyone physically tested both 9 and 10 speed derailleurs and can save me the hassle of doing it?

 

Looks like a 9 speed visually to me?

SRAM 9-speed has a derailleur ratio of 1.1 while 10-speed is 1.3 according to the Compatibility tab here:
