I currently have the 2003 Giant NRS 3 XTC, and am slowly converting it to more of an all mountain bike that i can take bigger hits with. I currenty putting new rims and tires as well as a new five inch front shock. The only problem is I weigh 190 and when i put enought air in the rear shock to take some bigger drops and jumps it turns really stiff on the trail, I was wondering if there was any tail shock that i could replace it with to give me more travel????

Sad to say, BUT, you need to be looking at a Trance for what you want to do. The NRS was designed as a race bike and as such isn't meant to be "dropped" or "jumped", except for maybe 6"-1ft like you would find on an XC race course. The harshness you're feeling is the suspension working how it was designed - race type, with just enough to take the edge off and not bob while pedaling .

I have to agree with LyNx, to a point, that the NRS isn't really made for "big hits". I have mine semi-converted to a trail bike with beefy wheels and a 120mm fork. I take lots of rock jumps and drops, catching 3-5 feet of air, BUT the transitions are smooth. If I did too many with big hit landings, forget about it. The NRS headstock wouldn't take that abuse for long. I also weigh about 195lbs.

There are longer rocker links available to increase the travel (do a search and you'll probably find them here, I forget who was selling them), but if you've already got the fork and wheels, I'd say leave the back end the way it is, and set it up as you normally would (your weight +10psi to just get 0 sag) and go ride it. If you break it, buy a Trance frame and swap your parts over. ;)

Now that's a great suggestions, except that head tubes ripping off mostly cause very nasty accidents and injury to the rider - that's why I didn't say/suggest it - but I agree find a closeout Trance and swap the parts over from the NRS.

FYI the rockers are no longer made, although you can still find some about the place for sale.

I claim no responsibility for any actions taken from my suggestions, of course. ;)

Realistically, you'd probably have to do something pretty crazy to rip the head off. Even though it is an XC race frame, it's not exactly weak... I dunno. I just ride the thing. haha
