What a mess. I was doing the Grip2 damper oil change per the instructions on the Fox site (2021 GRIP2 VVC Rebuild | Bike Help Center | FOX). Why is it when I go to purge the air from the damper (after I fill the tube 1/2 way with oil) per step #42, the system just spits out oil from the top in a violent manner? This isn't when the shaft is being pushed up, but when it's fully extended...the oil shoots out the top like a geyser. Any ideas what's causing this?

And now I can't torque the top cap down because there's oil everywhere causing spinning while torqueing. Ugh.

I have 2 Grip 2 dampers. Are you suppose to purge the oil out on lower leg service? I just replace the 40 cc of oil that it calls for and think that's enough!
What's in the damper will get mostly replaced thru cycling!

Cycle the shaft slowly, and only a few cms. You're only clearing air from the rebound circuit. Cover the top and don't look in it.
