Ergon handlebar end plugs: Why so complicated?

So, I shell out close to $30 for a new set of Ergon GP-1 grips...they look and feel great...can't wait to go on a lonnnnnnnnng ride tomorrow to get the full effect.

HOWEVER... the end plugs that came with these things are made from some crumbly low quality plastic that fell apart the minute I started pushing them in. I then started second guessing myself.... Maybe with a pair of $30 grips, the end plugs should be installed differently than usual. I went back and double-checked the instructions... nothin'.

I spent every waking hour for about 10 years working on drag race cars and it seemed like high performance parts always had minor part that the manufacturer skimped on. You'd have some $1,000 part with a 30 cent clamp that held it all together.

Why is it that with a $30 set of grips you don't get an end plug that goes in smoothly? ...and stays in.

Is it just me???

Because handlebars come in many different thicknesses. A DH specific bar is made of thicker material than and a lightweight carbon XC bar. If the plugs do not push in with your hand, simply trim square edges off the plug with a knife or scissors....should take less than a few minutes.

Jeff,
Too late. The square edges (and the rest of the ribs) are lying on my garage floor...they all crumbled right off when I tried to tap them in with a rubber mallet.

Perhaps the 287 characters above should be in the instruction booklet. If it is and I overlooked it, I apologize. I do not mean to bash.

Respectfully,
Matt

I have 3 sets of Ergons and still using the original plugs. Anything in the whole to keep dirt out if you lay it down. A friend uses tequila bottle corks.
