I just got a new Cross-Check frame which I am building up. The rear dropouts have adjusting screws for use with single speed/fixed hubs. My question is, if I'm using a freehub/rear derailer setup, is there a recommended setting for these screws? The frame came with the screws extended so that the rear axle sits almost all the way towards the open end of the dropout. I'm tempted to just remove the screws altogether so that I can just seat the axle all the way back and won't have to worry about one of the screws being set longer than the other and causing my rear wheel to be mounted crookedly. If I do this, does anyone have any suggestions for keeping the adjuster screw holes free of rust in case I want to use them later? I was thinking I could squirt some Frame Saver or Boeshield in there occasionally.
 
There is no problem with removing the screws and setting the axle in any position you wish when using gears. I use a fixed hub and have filled the hole with Waxoil to prevent any rust. Just go with what you feel is right, thats the beauty of a Surly.

It turns out that the threading is just plain old metric M3 x 0.5mm, and approximately 10mm long, so right now I've just plugged the holes with some greased CD-ROM mounting screws from my computer parts box. I've ordered some stainless steel screws (fastener-express.com is great for finding small metric fasteners) of the appropriate length so that will be a more permanent solution.

I think Waxoil is similar to Frame Saver/boiled linseed oil/Cosmoline/etc. so it sounds like that works well too.

thanks for the info.
I have one screw that's bent and was looking to replace it in order to run SS in the future.
I just checked out the website, qty 20. I guess I will have 19 spares :)
