Currently have a Shimano XT 2 x 10

26x38 chainring
11 x 36 M771 Cassette

Is there a cost effective way to move to a 1x11 ? Would like to have a lower gear and drop some weight.
Go with a full SLX group from Shimano with the 11-46 cassette and a narrow wide ring for your existing crank. Might not be the most "cost effective" way...but it'll be the most painless way to to. You can get the cassette, rear derailleur, shifter, and chain from Evans Cycles in the UK for under 200 with shipping.

If you want to save a few bucks and work off your 10sp shifter...you can get an 11sp SLX rear derailleur (or a Goat Link if your current rear derailleur is a shadow plus)...narrow wide ring...and a Sunrace 10sp 11-42 cassette.

You can get the entire set up inside the US for.under $200 too.

Nothing "cost effective" about changing standards. You want more range but 1x your sacrificing either top end or low range.

Better off going 1x10 but truly 1x is NOT an upgrade by any means. It was started by those of us that didn't need wide range of 2-3x. Now because people somehow started to consider it an "upgrade" it's being crammed down everyones throats as one.

On the plus side Shimano 1x11 is cheaper than Sram except NX (which is cheap and heavy made crap) for a good slx system.

After some thought, I'm thinking of running the following configuration;

Cassette: Shimano XT 11-46 (11sp)
Shifter: Shimano SLX (11sp)
Rear Der: Shimano XT (11sp Med Cage)
ChainRing: Race Face Narrow Wide 30t
Chain: Shimano SLX

Not the most cost effective, but will get me a lower gear, albeit w/ some top range loss. Approx $230 using Jenson's.. I think.

Am I missing anything ? I'm assuming the Narrow Wide will work with my existing cranks ?

You have to match the chainring to the crank standard. Raceface makes the 30t in more than one standard. So you'll need to make sure to the the one for 104bcd.

And you are using a gear inches calculator to make sure you actually getting lower range, 26-36 granny range is pretty low.

It's one of those things don't try to follow what people are saying is the "cool" thing now. Instead worry about what works for you. If you want to keep top end but need a little lower, you could get a 11-42 cassette or simply change the 26t ring for a 24t ring. Total cost is about $20 or less for the ring.

Now being set on 11s your set up good and will serve you well.

Lol...you might as well drop the extra 12 bucks and get the XT shifter.

Personally I plan to go with Sunrace 11-46 instead of XT 11-46 since there is less jump from 2nd to 1st cog (40->46, not 37->46), might be a bit cheaper too.

And I'd rather have XT shifter and SLX derailleur, not the other way round. A bit cheaper and shifter has more impact on the shifting quality. Besides you are less likely to wreck SLX derailleur (steel cage) and it's cheaper to replace if you do.
