Cane creek kitsuma coil rattle

The last few rides I’ve been chasing a rattle on my Altitude. The rattle sounds like it’s coming from the front of the bike but only happened when the rear is dropped or going over small chatter with the rear. Noticed it only happened since I put the kitsuma on.
When I got home I could replicated it by licking the rear up about 3 inches and dropping it. I figured let me lock out the shock and maybe it’ll make the rattle easier to identify, however, it was gone. When the shock is open the rattle is loud, but locked out it’s entirely gone.
I took the shock out and reinstalled it, made sure every bolt and bearing was torqued to spec, and I put a ton of preload on the coil to eliminate the actual coil from making noise.

Anyone else have this issue with a kitsuma? Anything else to check? I’m about 95% certain the noise is coming from the shock. My X2 didn’t make this noise at all.

Probably shouldn't lick your shock.

Have you tried contacting a Cane Creek repair center for advice? Cane Creek has a list of them on their website.

I once hat a Kitsuma coil makeing a knocking sound on switch from compression to rebound movement.

I disassembled the shock, checked the base valves, bleed the shock properly and reassembled everything. Still the same knocking sound. I ended up returning it to the seller.

I opened a thread here at that time but all advise I got was sending it of to CC.

As far as I understand it's a noise caused by the hydraulic switching oil pressure direction and my guess is it's caused by the check valve.
I have seen similar noises on some fork damper cartridges where the fix of the manufacturer was changing the spring and shim for the check valve.

Hope that helps

Ah, guess I’ll let CC take a look and when it comes back I’ll just sell it off. Sad because I love supporting local companies but I can’t stand that rattle

Just came across your post. I'm dealing with the same problem. I sent it away for warranty service back in march to rectify the issue. When I got it back and put it on, I crashed and broke my hand first lap, so just getting back out there now. The shock is still rattling, and it feels like absolute garbage with all that racket. I'm pretty sure I can feel it, as with a different shock, it feels way smoother. The noise/feeling is more apparent with the switch on 'climb', and locked, there is no noise at all. It seems like what evernorth said, that it appears to be coming from the change from compression to rebound, almost like the piston isn't tight. Seems odd for a premium shock to be making so much noise. I don't want to, but it'll likely be getting sent back to have this addressed...
