I received a response letter today from my email to Rep. Rahall. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.... 86% trails in Mon are open to bicycles. Reduce that number by 6%...BLAH BLAH BLAH... You'll love this "my office has been in negotiations with the International Mountain Biking Association in an effort to provide for no net loss of biking trails within the forest." Sounds like they are proposing new trails to replace the trails we are losing. Wonder if they appropriating extra funds for IMBA (owww, I just fell off the couch laughing).

I did learn that Pathfinder in Morgantown has notified WVWC that they are taking no official position on the proposal as a business. Wonder if WVWC will remove their name from the list of businesses supporting the proposal?

More names of people that are supporting the Wilderness Bill who should be boycotted as anti-mountain biking.

I think that protecting these beautiful areas is a great idea, and is a necessity in this state. Unfortunately, Wilderness Area designations are too often used, not only as a simplifying catch-all, but as somewhat of a trophy for those who are pushing for their acceptance.

I've seen National Recreation Areas, National Scenic Areas or National Conservation Areas suggested as alternatives. I think it's important to note that, in these types of battles, alternates are a must. Fighting to maintain the current status (= no regulation) is pointless, and not necessarily something I agree with. The fact that such legislation has made it this far should be a good sign for WV. Unfortunately, its creation has been misguided. Let's just hope, at the very least, that in the future cyclists have more of a say.

When IMBA talks about the West Virginia Congressmen like this, it is easy to see why Mountainbikers get ignored.
"This is all about the deal the "environmentalists" cut with Mr. Mountain Top Removal to give him some "green" carbon credits. Now they are in bed with a guy who has denounced wind power and is embracing a mythical "clean" coal technology." Because Congressman Rahall's district includes the coalfields and Congressman Mollohan, who's district includes Dolly Sods, has been pushing for siting regulations for wind farms. Congressman Rahall is Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, insulting him like this will hurt mt biker's efforts nationwide as all wilderness legislation goes through his committee. IMBA is pretty ignorant to use such language, no wonder mountain bikers lost out in the West Virginia wilderness bill. Until we have some representation that knows the meaning of diplomacy, we can expect more of that treatment in the future. Calling the people we should be negotiating with "Nature Nazis" as IMBA reps do, is hardly going to get us anywhere. It makes me feel embarassed and ashamed to have my interests represented by these guys.

Whit,

I recognize and have met personally and worked or studied with many of the names on that list. I sincerely doubt that most of them even realize that the Bill excludes mountain bikers, so I disagree that they should be "boycotted" as anti-mountain bike.

Probably someone at work shoved a petition in front of them that said "Save the Wilderness", and honestly who would want to be "anti" Wilderness? I personally before reading this thread was unaware that any of that bill excluded cyclists, and would have signed just such a petition.

Lets not paint people as evil who may just have an incomplete or different perspective than you.

virginiamtbdr, I had a long response to this but figured it would just stir a big flame war and that's not me. From my own personal communications and the responses I've received from our great  congressmen and women on this issue, it was already a done deal regardless of what myself as a citizen of WV, the WVMBA, other mountain bike clubs and businesses or IMBA for that matter have to say. The Wilderness Coalition seems to have typed all the responses (nearly word for word) and I could easily see why even an IMBA rep feels that way. However, I would not have posted it on a public forum, I would just do it like I am and make sure none of my friends or relatives ever vote for the congressmen and senators involved again. They should at least make an honest effort to listen to every Citizen of the state involved, not ask what organization I represent? (None) and give a reason for their decision instead of quoting some rendition I've read online. Shame on them !

This was on the WVMBA forum for quite a while. It was a response to the testimony of Rev. Sparks from the Council of Churches. Although now I don't see it up there, so they must have removed it. I'm not making this stuff up. This guy is listed on the IMBA website as the WV IMBA Representative.

Too bad the Wilderness folks don't have a forum of their own to play on!!!
But they don't believe in an open forum or a debate. They can't even sign their name to what they say.

This is a great lesson in how our so-called democracy works. Not one of the vast majority of West Virginians, who do not support this bill, was allowed to testify.

How does it feel to wake up next to the biggest environmental disaster in WV every day Dave, Matt, Micheal, Beth and Mary?

My bike is my church pew and my church is Dolly Sods North. Reverend Sparks is telling me that he wants it to be against the law for me to go to my church to worship. What if they made it illegal for you to go to church, sir?

Tass makes a good point. If you know any of those listed in any of these lists, make sure you contact them and let them know that it also helped take away your ability to ride in those places.

You can bet the person who started the petition isn't going to put "Save the Wilderness and prohibit bicycles, carts, chainsaws (to keep the trails clear) and other mechanized devises out" petition. Nope, they just push "Save the Wilderness" and most people don't investigate further and just sign.

It has been noted early on that many of the businesses that were listed on that list had not even signed anything, supported anything, etc. just showed up and sat in on a wilderness coalition meeting and were automatically put on the list. Again, if you know these businesses or people, you might let them know what they have done, or that the WVWC is making everyone believe they did.

virginiamtnbkr: I don't think it's fair using what one guy posts on an internet forum as grounds to condemn IMBA. What I have read on the WVMBA and IMBA websites, along with the congressional testimony has been very civil and rational. One could certainly troll the web forums of many wilderness advocacy groups and find similar tirades against politicians from the other side of this debate. The question is whether it is worthwhile keeping trails that have been used and maintained for years by mountain bikers open to mountain bikers. I think that is a valid argument that we need to keep focused on.

That's Matt alright. Read it myself on the wvmba forum. He's calling it like he sees it. virginiabiker, if you don't like his expressions of personal opinion you're free to not renew your WVMBA membership.

Tass, I appreciate your position and respect these individuals for all that it takes to be in the medical profession. The petition is something located on the coalition website and specifically targets people in the medical profession. My point is if you are going to sign your name to something you better make sure you know what you are signing. These people are being represented as authorities on what is good for people and they seem to know better than the general population about "wilderness". I use this as further example of the lies and propaganda that the Wild Mon Coalition is spreading.

Anybody see where Capitol has proposed a change to the bill? She wants to take out the land in Randolph County, specifically that surrounding the scenic railroad. The county commission voted against the bill. If you haven't done the scenic train from Elkins to the High Falls yet you should. I rode it last fall with family visiting from out of state and the scanner is amazing.

Banff Film Festival in Motown Thursday night. They are supposed to have a film with Ryan Leech done on some sweet single-track on private property before it was logged. I can't wait to see if the liar gets to make some presentation.

WIlderness Update

Just spoke with Capito's office today. Bill "mark-up" is scheduled for Wednesday (which is when they "mark up" the Bill like your 3rd grade teacher did to english papers) and Congresswoman Capito is recommending that only Roaring Plains West be designated wilderness in her district (meaning we are still going to lose Dolly Sods and the others that are within the original plan). However, she is not going to recommend Seneca Creek, Roaring Plains East/North, and Cheat Mountain for wilderness. I don't know if she will prevail, but call her office and request that she stick to her guns (Ask for Virginia Gumm).

Also, why does Elk Eiver Tourring Center remain a sponsor of this forum when they advocated for the prohibition of mountain biking on all these lands. MTBR.com personell should look for new sponsors.
