Broken Hanger -What happens?

Had a rear derailleur hanger break on a ride this week. Was coasting along about 5mph in the woods and snap, broken just like that. Rear derailleur is repairable, strangely.

No big deal, because it happens to everyone (first time for me), but when inspecting closer, I realize the hanger also did some damage to the frame where it was bolted with two small screws. If the frame is bent back to shape, it may break. I'm wondering if I will have to purchase a new seatstay if this happens, or if the frame gets warranted because the hanger should save the frame from this.

Anyone experience this before. Frame is a new Specialized Stumpjumper FSR.

Either way I will get it fixed.

EDIT: I didn't get that fiorst paragraph to come out the way it should have. I was on a club ride, a stick, branch, ect whatever it was DEFINITELY went into the rear wheel and snapped the derailleur and hanger off the bike. It didn't just fall off, that would be silly and unbelieveable. Hangers don't snap on their own. I just thought it was weird that I wasn't putting any torque on the drivetrain at the time and it blew.

Well I seriously doubt that the hanger breaking was caused by your just riding along. It likely was damaged before when you weren't just riding along and took it's sweet time to fail. Not uncommon. Would warranty cover it? Depends on what you did before that was the real cause of it's becoming fatally wounded. If I was the specialized dealer and you came to me with the just riding along story I'd say you're outta luck. Then again if you explained all the things you'd done that would likely be the result of it having been damaged(eg: hitting on a rock or two while threading your way through a rock garden...falling a few times...etc) then I'd likely warranty it as that sort of thing does happen and is expected since it is a mountain bike. :) If it was fatally wounded because of it falling off your car then I'd say own up to it and pay for the new rear stay. It's all about good vs. evil and karma. ;-)

this may be of no use

I mangled a derrailleur hanger earlier this fall as well. I also bent the frame end just a little bit. After ordering two new hangers, one real and one spare, I just put it back together and it worked fine, didn't even have to retune the derrailleur!! Of course my bike is really old and there was no chance of a warranty, so I'd suggest talking with specialized first.

Good luck,

Robin

Assuming you believe it's a factory "defect", specialized has a great warranty policy, and seems to it honor fast and consistently. I'd take your bike into a specialized dealer and get their opinion ASAP. They'd be the ones to initiate the warranty policy anyways.

It's not the dropout

Then you might consider buying another swingarm chainstay assembly. But seriously i dont think that the dropout itself is bent. I'll bet it looks like its bent because of the bent hanger. Take the hanger off and then inspect the dropout.
The hanger was ripped off, (a stick?? most likely ) snapped at the dropout. Half stayed in betweeen the wheel and the frame, the rest came out with the derailleur. The small threaded tabs that the hanger were screwed into bent (one of them), and the bolt stayed. The entire bike is at the shop I dropped it off yesterday. I was just wondering how others have had it ahndled really, not that I need to know which way the warranty will go or not. If it needs replacing, it gets replaced, on my coin or theirs. I just don't want to be the one to break the bent tab while bending it back.

ALSO, what happens when a chainstay is no longer available for your model bike? How do they handle that? I know of a couple instances where the riders bikes were under frame warranty, but because the part that needed to be replaced wasn't available, the entire frame would be swapped for a newer model.
