Regarding hitch racks for high-end mountain bikes, 1UP USA is the go-to brand for many with brand loyalty envied by many companies. With an elegant, all-metal rack that still looks great after a decade of use and with great resale value, it's a rack that has stood the test of time. In fact, most owners go through many bikes and brands and are more loyal to the 1up brand than their bikes.
Thus, it is noteworthy news when 1UP USA releases a major update, as seen in this new Super Duty or SD rack. Check the video for the full review and stress test of this rack.
The significant updates are:
1up racks are modular and space efficient so they ship in compact but heavy boxes depending on your configuration.
Laying it out before assembly helps one understand how the whole system comes together.
I don't need the optional wheel chock since it is recommended for bikes over 75 lbs or for significant off-roading. But I had to see this CNC wonder in person. It certainly did not disappoint.
A key to the rack's success is the long hitch bolt slot that allows the distance of the rack to the car to be adjusted. The anti-wobble ball cam was shipped with a vinyl sticker covering it. Not sure of its purpose so we removed it for this test.
A subtle key to 1up's success is the frame of the rack slopes up to host each tray. This allows the bikes to be at different levels for less handlebar and pedal interference.
To counter the slope of the 1up frame, each tray holder is slanted to keep the trays level.
Here is the 2-rack Super duty, mounted very close to the vehicle. The 2-rack system can host up to four trays and the 1-rack stealthy system can host up to three trays and bikes. My recommendation is to buy the 1-rack system and 2 additional trays. This will allow a very discrete system while having the full capacity for three very heavy bikes without obstructing visibility.
The trays can be mounted for a 54" wheelbase or 58" wheelbase max capacity.
The arms are now very wide and sturdy. The tray can host up to a 5" tire as well.
The rack is seen here with the optional wheel chocks installed. The chocks come in standard size or fat tire size.
The arms now open very wide and they can be pushed to the ground to make way for an optional ramp use.
The button is a great innovation since it can be lifted up to disengage the ratchet. This allows one-handed rack arm movement.
The 4-bike system is seen here with bike locks that go between the arm and the wheel. This system weighs about 130 lbs.
The 4-bike system extends out 123cm or 4 feet from the car.
Price:
2-bike Super duty - $900
