The Forester is light years ahead of a Hummer in terms of fuel efficiency and practicality.
Yeah but the Forester is a chick car! Nyaaaah Nyaaah.

Honestly I was kind of bored and I thought this thread was really freaking stupid so I tried to stir it up a bit with the Hummer comment. Wtf is a 'chick car' and why would anyone care? Now you have me worried.

For the record, I do not have any intentions of owning a Hummer. However, I do not see that vehicle in particular as that big of a deal. I read somewhere that the average number of passengers in a car is 1.1. Basically, the vast majority of people on the road are single motorists. If you want to make a difference, carpool or take the bus to work. If you already do that, then ok, you have might have a legitimate complaint about huge gas guzzling cars.

Mission accomplished, Pot stirred.

No problems Beans, I see so many Hummers up here in Calgary that they are starting to bug me. Calgary is the oil hub of Canada and the Hummer equates to money I suppose. I was in B.C. last summer and I saw a R.V. luxury bus pulling a full size Hummer behind it. Usually you see one of these buses pulling a Miata(sp)? or Tracker, but this dude was pulling a Hummer. His business I guess, but I cant help but thinking, what a monumental waste of resources. Not to mention that they take up the entire road.

You are right that there are many things we can do ie. carpooling and transit etc. I do my share of carpooling and walking etc, but could do more. I actually drive a small size Ford Bronco ll, but I drive in Northern Alberta in the winter for my job sometimes and the 4x4 comes in handy. The old Bronco stays parked quite a bit in the city though.

That's not the point. Nobody said Subies are chick cars, the topic is about Foresters specifically. He drives a Forester and not a macho racer like an STi.
In certain parts of the country, it is well known fact that Subarus are preferred by lesbians.
And again, Lance drives Forrester coz he does Forrester commercials, not sti.

I work at an elementary school (a very manly job) and at 3:00, the parking lot is about 50% mini-vans, and 50% SUVs--big ones like the Denali, Excursion, etc. All these big macho SUV's are always driven by moms with lots of kids. Those big SUVs are basically raised up mini-vans.

I'll take a Forrester any day.

Butch enough for me :)

I've owned a couple "masculine" cars: Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Toyota Tundra.

Form follows function in the case of Subarus and I have to say that the Forester has excellent function. Very practical, durable, fast, handles ok, hauls a lot of junk anywhere I want to go. It is a perfect mountain biking and skiing car for me.

I've had it in a foot of snow and at 100mph with 3 bikes on top. I say that the men and women who like foresters have good taste.

I disagree

there are no chic cars, only chic drivers. you are not what you drive. I drove a $3k cavalier for 2 1/2 years, but I ride a $4k titainium bike. I didnt feel emasculated by the beater car, I just figured I had my priorities in the right place.
New style VW beetle definetely chic car. ever see a guy drive on of those? it just looks wrong.

better to sit...

If I sat to piss, I'd end up having to pinch off an acorn.
and let the acorn fall, than stand and have it catch you by surprise.
Suddenly you're very wide awake, in the laundry room, cleaning up.

Lance Armstrong drives a Forester.

Seriously. If you have a chance to catch TLC's episode of Overhaulin' where they jack his GTO and "overhaul" it, when they meet up with him, he's leaning on his Forester with Sportworks hitch rack.
I was just going to mention that. Saw the episode, and took note of the forester right away. The last redesign definitely helped the vehicle. The older ones did not look as nice. About it being a chick car, i have not noticed that at all.

Don't worry about it.

Those dinosaur powered Subarus are going to be extinct in the future as well. They don't really get an exceptional MPG either. Is it really practical to put a turbo engine in a grocery getter?
Actually, putting a turbo on a 4 cylinder engine isnt a bad idea. You get the power of a V6 at high rpms, and the fuel efficiency of a 4 cylinder at low rpms. So if you drive a manual transmission, keep it at low revs when you're cruisin, and rev it high when you're getting on the highway, you can save gas and still have the power people like to have in a car. So yes, it is practical. One drawback to a turbo engine is maintenance. But the way subaru builds nowadays, and the fact that turbos are more effiecient, better built, easier to maintain, means that it is less of a problem than it used to be.

As for the claim that it is a chic car. I dont think so. I see all sorts of different people driving foresters. Its a run of the mill car as far as looks go.

Real men stand up to pee (obviously)

How many guys do sit down and pee when half asleep? I don't but two of my friends do and they are not gender benders? They claim they are half asleep and don't want to open their eyes for fear of total wake up mode when say it is 4am and half to pp. they are alitte weird too!!!
Hmmm...

Thats a lame excuse... you prob... sorry - your 'friend' probably has a hard time fighting his supressed urge to sit down to pee when he is tired. That or maybe he's concerned about getting the front of his nightie wet while standing. :D
