I was sincerely surprised at how many I could answer without googling.

But hey, I'm still holding out for unicorns and rainbows.

Hey Folks - I want to thank all who've responded and applied so far. It's been really great. We're going to continue to accept applications until the end of the week, and then we'll go through the applicants and whittle it down to the folks we want to interview in person. Everyone who has applied will hear from us by close of business Monday, March 14.

Lot's of good people out there & don't let not knowing all the answers prevent you from applying if a job like this really resonates with you. Sometimes knowing what you don't know is just as important as knowing what you do. Thanks again.

I like this guy already...that's one of the most important things in any career in my opinion.

My current problem with work is I don't know what I don't know. That's what makes things exceedingly difficult!

On the heels of this, a buddy sent me this link. I don't necessarily agree with everything this guy says, but a lot of it really resonates with me & this short vid is well worth watching + it has vintage moto content!

"Our largest problem facing us the de-industrialization of American..." "Our can do American spirit is being lost..."

Whatever, I'm going back to playing [insert video game title here] now... ;)

If you guys lived closer I would love to help just for the experience.... even though I have a job. I used to have a welding and auto shop before I got my ME degree, and I mostly agree with the vid. I'm not really sure how we can fix the issue unless everyone insisted in buying things made in the USA. I'm no nationalist and don't "love America" but taking advantage of temporary differences in worldwide currency exchange and lower standards of living in other countries in order to cut costs seems tragic, shortsighted and unethical. I am actually in favor of a worldwide marketplace but the transition to this type of economy is being manipulated by large corporations and isn't fair to either the producing or the consuming societies. The producers environment is being f'ed up and it is in the corporations best interest to keep the standards of living and working as low as possible, while the consumers' middle class jobs (and now even jobs like engineering and design are outsourced) are now gone.

Thought I'll be a good chap and solve the riddles for you. Correct answers:

1. The lid for a box is 30” X 36”. The side boards are made of standard 1” pine dimensional lumber. What lengths should the side boards be?

I am applying as a machinist, not a carpenter.

2. Put in order from smallest to largest: Letter F drill bit, 1/8”, 3mm, #7 drill bit, one hundred and thirteen thousandths, 10mm end mill, tap drill for 3/8-16 fastener, .250", 10 gauge steel plate.

3mm, 4 characters
1/8”, 5 characters
.250", 6 characters
#7 drill bit, 13 characters
10mm end mill, 14 characters
Letter F drill bit, 19 characters
10 gauge steel plate. 21 characters
tap drill for 3/8-16 fastener, 30 characters
one hundred and thirteen thousandths, 37 characters

3. How many 8” pieces can you cut out of a 12’ long piece of material? Think about it, yo.

Indefinite, unlimited, any number - depends on width and heigth of material and piece.

4. If two sides of a right triangle are 3 and 4 feet long. How long is the hypotenuse?

Depends on how hard you hit that triangle.

5. If a 2” ID tube is slit open with a ½” cutter, how long is the piece if spread out flat?

No worries, the cutter will still be ½” .

6. How many thousandths are in an inch?

Always one less than required after you cut the thing to it's specified length. Go tell the customer.

7. What does "five-tenths" mean to you?

The dream of a tip I never got during my tenure as a fast food chef.

8. All other variables being equal what is the difference in length of a chainstay for a 24” inch wheel and a 29” wheel?

A wheel has spokes - not chainstays. Thought you guys know bikes?

9. Name 20 bicycle frame brands.

Amity
Asahi
Conor
Massi
Mondraker
Monti
Karbona
Kinesis
UMF
Wheeler
Arkus
Dunkon

Eddy MCX. Roadie. Doesn't count.

12. If the guy who signs your paycheck says he wants something done right away, how long should you wait before doing it?

Two possible correct answers:

- Until you get a check that doesn't bounce.
- Until you've done all the tasks the guy who puts the numbers on the check wants you to.

13. What is the difference between precision and accuracy?

My ability to use that 'folded to a point' toilette paper I usually find in hotels.

14. What does SFM mean to you?

Surreal Feet Maggots

16. You walk into a machine shop and you find that none of the calculators work as you might expect them to. Why is that?

I had a beer to much last night and actually walked into Jiffy Lube by mistake.

Hey, who won the honors of being the shop b!tch?

errrrr intern?
Thanks for asking. I honestly don't know if he posts here or not. Anyway, the pick of the litter is a welder, fabricator, bike mechanic, took a Ti framebuilding class in the past so knows the basics there, lives a few miles away, rides his bike to work. Seems smart, works hard, can read a tape measure, and has already taken charge of an involved fabrication project. In short, he's been impressing the hell out of us. We just need to get him working more hours a week.

Ithnu, thanks for following up on this post. I was wondering the same thing. And I was wondering if I should have applied, even though I have a "good" full-time gig. Sounds like I would have been wasting my time. Sounds like you found a dandy, Don!
