When I purchased my Mary a couple weeks back one of the last things that was said to me at the LBS is that if I want to run a bigger chainring - and I might b/c the stock is sorta small - come in and we will change it.

I may be off in my count but I'm figuring the ratio for the stock Mary is 32 X 20.

Looking at the photos of the mountain bike Mary's on this thread it appears to my naked eye that most owners have kept the stock chainring.

My riding thus far has suggested to me on flats I'm a little slow and peddling slightly more than I like, uphills are about perfect - as are downhills.

This suggests to me (very much a novice SS'r) that at best a slight adjustment could be made in chainring size - but, I'm surmising that a small size change will make only a slight difference and isn't worth the trouble.

Am I wrong? In other words - how much more would you go up in chainring size for it to make a difference?

Thanks in advance for any reply(ies).
Most folks simply change the rear cog. One tooth difference makes a pretty significant change. It also changes the EBB position, and therefor the fit/geometry. After much tweaking, I found 32/19 with the EBB in the lowest/rearmost position possible (I think I removed a link, then added a half-link) was the best for me. Experimenting with different set-ups can be fun AND educational.

Appreciate the comments thus far. I know with SS you're making a committement that you have one speed that will work for you as best as possible on various terrain. I have a geared FS 26er and have rode at fixed settings to get a feel - it has helped but the 29" wheels on the Mary make a difference which I cannot account for. More than anything I was curious about general consensus on the stock Mary - do most people change or no. I suppose it is hard to answer depending on the terrain you ride and not knowing what I mostly ride on. The LBS people just seemed pretty sure I'd want to change out but I'm pretty content....then again, how do I know what other ratios feel like. Guess only one way to find out. For now - I'm thinking I should stand pat. Thanks.

Here's mine, that I built up today. Just need to trim the brake lines a bit. Stock (well...) except Thomson stem and post, Salsa Pro moto bars, Avid Elixir R 160/185mm brakes, Spank lock-on grips, Sunline V1 saddle, Shimano P-M520 pedals, FSA Orbit XL-II headset and Intense System 29 tires. I hope it'll be fun. ...And I'll probably build it some new wheels too, just for fun.

All dressed up.

Got my Mary XC second hand last year. Technically she's my first mountain bike...and you always remember your first. Fell in love with the bike and the sport instantly. Very confidence inspiring bike. After being forced into using her as my winter commuter this year (not by choice but by bus strike) I decided to dress her up a this year. It came stock except for a tora 318 fork instead of a reba. I stripped her of her gears and put her on a diet. It was tough for her but she likes what she sees.

Main changes are:

Juicy 7 Brakes
Easton One 29 ss wheelset with Ardent/Crossmark tires
Easton Monkeylite XC Bar
Thomson seatpost and a Pure V saddle
SS 32:21 ratio

I've got her down to a bit under 26lbs without pedals. Not bad for a 6lb frame and 5lb fork.

Gonna christen the wheels this weekend :)

Bought a 2009 Mary SS and love it, the steel frame is very worth the extra money over the Ally SS....although the Ally is nice, 4130 CroMo really does ride better. Glad that the LBS guys talked me into the Mary instead....even let me test ride their personal bike since the shop didn't have it in stock....great guys! Pics coming.....

I totally agree with you about the Mary, great handling and ride quality. I'm running the Nevegals tubeless on Arch rims and it's better than ever. I did some research on the designer SSMike, he modelled the Mary after the early 90's 26" WTB Phoenix, considered one of the finest trail bikes ever. Absolutely nailed it. If anyone is on the fence about buying this bike, don't hesitate, you won't be dissapointed! Hi Jill!
X2.

Still running standard on mine, sometimes I wish I had a taller gears sometimes lower, but most of the time feels just right, if you want to play around with gearing go buy a geared bike, Life is about compromises and as long as there is a smile on your face dont worry
X2...and stock gearing seems pretty good for most places that I've ridden it so far. SS gearing is a compromise, but if you want play with it and see. However, sounds like it is pretty good for you. The most important part is the climbs, how much walking do you want to do? :)

Street Mary

Since I moved back to Berlin, Germany last month I put my Mary now into Street-outfit and use it mainly for commuting to work. It's a lot of fun. Those huge Schwalbe tires are comfortable but damn heavy (close to 2 pounds each). I am still looking for a nicer fender solution, but not a lot fits those 2.3 tires.

Mary 1x9 -my 1st build project

Here are a couple shots of my new Mary 1x9. I have been working on it for awhile and finally was able to take her out this morning. It was awesome! Thanks to everyone on the forum who has been helping out, especially PatSS who has answered a million questions since I started the project. Building the bike has been almost as fun as riding it.

Yes, she has been a lot of fun to ride. I was not sure if it was all 29er hype going into the project, but have come to appreciate the difference in the ride between it and my Flightline. Both are awesome bikes and I try to ride them equally.

I am running 2.1 Motos on the front and rear of the Mary. Although it is spec'd for 2.25 Nevegals I rubbed paint from the inside of the upper seat stays and on the left chain stay. I am guessing this is from the mud trapped there on some really wet rides. Anyone else have a similar experience? I attempted a color match using Tequila Sunrise nail polish and Ford Chrome Yellow touch up paint. Its close enough and gave me a pause for reflection from those HS art classes many years ago.

It must be from mud, the Mary was designed to be run with bigger tires then the Gals.
Yes and/or QR not tight enough. On today's ride a friend (who weighs a few more pounds than I) borrowed my Mary for a few minutes and after doing a stoppy (nose wheelie) my front wheel was cocked in the forks. :eekster: Re-positiioned the wheel and tIghtened up the QR a bit more. Stock QRs on it have the nylon piece under the lever which makes it difficult to get them really nice and tight. May have to replace them with something better.

Shimano QR's are awesome either the XT or XTR.

I am very interested in getting a 29r SS. I was initially looking at the GT Peace but the more I research the Haro Mary SS the more I like it. Now I need to decide on the colour. The green looks good but it is hard to tell what the blue looks like. it seems to look different in every shot, HA! It does look cool either way. What is the going price for a 2009? Any deals out there or good used?
Thanks

I saw the blue at my LBS and it is a really sweet color. If I was going SS I would get the blue. Its more of a Carolina (light) blue.
Yeah, I am leaning toward blue myself. I like the contrast of the blue with black tires/forks. $899 at LBS, be nice to get it on sale, HA! We will see when I can get one. ;)

Thanks, I'll check em out! :) The dang Giant QR seatpost clamp that I bought has a nylon washer under the lever and it is hard to get it tight enough that my seatpost doesn't slowly sink into the seat tube.....but it was all they had in stock.

That is a good deal, buy it if you like it!

New Mary SS 18"...

Image

I was torn between the 18" and 20" size, ( too low vs. too long) but the 18" fits just and just with the stock seatpost. It's above the minimum insertion mark, but still goes to the seat tube the same depth as the shim... Any seatpost that goes below the shim is meaningless, am I right?

Changed the 20t sprocket to 18t right away, and it feels good that way. The Nevagals must be the slowest tires I've ever had, going to change them to Racing Ralph soon... 185mm rotor also coming to front.

I'm 6ft with 92cm inseam btw.
