New Chisel owner checking in!

Wanted something that wouldn't be redundant of my trail bike (YT Jeffsy) & something that would be light'ish/quick for lunch rides & when I ride with some of my XC buddies that don't leave the ground. Chisel looks like it should fit the bill. Found a medium 2021 on Pinkbike (which is as new as new can get) & am going to build it with mostly spare parts.

Build will be as follows (to start):
Frame: Medium 2021
Fork: Likely a SID for the 35mm stanchions, undecided on travel...but thinking 120mm
Cockpit: Nukeproof carbon bars & whatever stem I have in the parts bin
Brakes: Deore 4 pots
Saddle: Specialized Phenom
Dropper: Not sure...have to see what fits...but probably a PNW or OneUp
Cranks: GX Carbon 170's
Shift/Der: GX Eagle 12spd
Cassette: NX (boat-anchor, but it's an extra part I have)
Wheels: RaceFace Arc 30's on i9 1/1 (overkill for this bike, but it's what I have)
Tires: Bontrager XR4's or Vittoria Barzo/Mezcal combo (probably the later to keep weight down)

That's a bout it...will post the build when I'm done...just waiting on the RideWrap & a few bits to arrive.

Any update on the RideWrap install? I should receive my set today so hoping you may have some tips specific to the Chisel. Cheers

I would say the only semi-difficult part is the downtube. It's a large piece of wrap & you wrap it from underneath to the top where the bottle bosses are. It's helpful to have it in a stand where you can rotate the frame 180 degrees. I did end up with some small bubbles on the underneath of the downtube. I just got to a point where I was tired of squeegee'ing them out & started to overwork the plastic a bit.

There are also two small pieces of wrap that go between the headtube piece & then the downtube piece (right at the opening for dropper/brake hose). Those pieces were not cut super accurately like the rest of the wrap & the fit wasn't the best....not real noticeable, but a slight annoyance for the cost of the wrap.

Any other questions, let me know.

Thanks for the response and update. I will be doing mine tomorrow and great to hear some specifics and feedback. I was also interested on how it formed around the Specialized logo on the downtube , as on my frame that logo is relatively pronounced so wondered if it would "sit" properly. Will post some pics once done.

Seems like a huge hassle to do something like this.
It’s really not bad at all (if the frame is stripped that is) & there’s other options that are more simple with less coverage of course. I was done in a couple hours.

That said, when I did my full sus (which was built) …THAT was a hassle, lol! I was cursing myself for doing it…but the end product was worth the effort.

Im pretty rough on my bikes…so the extra protection to keep ‘em looking decent is worth it to me. 👍🏻

What axle to crown lengths are people running with rigid forks? Whisky has both the 485mm and LT 500mm a2c forks, with the latter being designed for a 120-130mm fork replacement. The 485mm rigid forks seems like a more direct replacement for the stock fork, but is anyone running the longer version? Seems like the additional 15mm should be fine and just result in a slightly higher front end, BB and slacker seat tube angle.

Thanks

My Enve is 490mm, which they (Enve) say is for a 100 to 140mm fork. I guess 500mm would be a touch too slack for my riding style and the tight trails I frequent.

What specific kit did you order? I don’t see any of the tailored protection kits for a chisel. I assume you ordered a generic covered protection kit for a hardtail mountain bike? I was wondering if any of the pieces were too large since a chisel has very skinny tubes, so maybe the generic covered protection for a gravel bike frame would work better. Also was it a matte or gloss kit? Thanks!

I bought the custom Specialized Chisel Alloy 29 Medium frame protection, which is not the same as the generic frame coverage - product name is RWSPECIALIZEDCHISEL202129AM. You have to search for your bike, and run through the various options until you get to this page:

Oh no, it appears that they only have the tailored protection for small and medium frames. I have a large. I requested them to design a custom large one, but if anyone else can request it too so we can bring some attention that would be awesome!
Yeah, that’s the kit I used. Stinks they don’t have a large kit! Kinda odd…

No you don’t have to remove the bottom bracket. There is a plate on the bottom you pull off and it fairly easy to rout the cable through.
Ta for that. Bike was left at my dad's whilst I went home to collect dropper. So couldn't check it myself. Thought I'd better ask to see if I needed any extra tools or tips.

This may also mean I can quickly swap between dropper and fixed post. For some bikepacking trips a dropper won't be needed, but saving weight will. A lot cheaper than getting an AXS Reverb too.
