Since the SRAM UDH is plastic (at least the hanger part is) is it impossible to bend it? My assumption is no, the plastic would just break, but I’m no polymer scientist and I hate assumptions.

If that’s the case, is derailleur hanger alignment now a step we can remove from our drivetrain trouble shooting? Assuming the bike has a UDH of course.

I've had zero issues aligning mine and several of my friends. Seems to behave like aluminum to me... albeit much burlier than hangers of the past.

Honestly, an impact hard enough to pretzel even a normal replaceable hanger probably isn't going to do that derailleur any favors either. I'm pretty sure the point is to save your frame.
I've seen derailleur cages bend before the hanger does too.

I wish my bikes had them. Even though they have pretty stout hangers, having a universally available hanger is awesome.

In years past I’ve had a cannondale, trek and intense, all with spindly hangers (Actually, the trek’s was more brittle than spindly). And they all worked as they should have. The hangers almost always snapped before the derailleur was damaged. All the bikes I’ve bought with beefy hangers (ventanas and Konas), the derailleurs bend either before the hanger or at the same time.

Why not save the derailleur too?

There are a few versions of the SRAM UDH hanger. The official SRAM one is co-moulded plastic for the hanger part and the main threaded bolt is aluminium.

There are several aftermarket UDH hangers that are completely metal however so depending on the bike the hanger could be either the official SRAM one or a metal hanger. As it’s a universal design the hanger should be replaceable with any other UDH hanger.

Nukeproof do a replacement UDH hanger in aluminium:

Wheels Manufacturing make a replacement UDH hanger in aluminium that also comes in a variety of colours for the bolt too:

What really sucks is that the thread of the Wheels Mfg bolt is different than the OEM UDH, so if I bend my fancy orange-bolt-fastened hanger, I need to spend another $48. I'd much rather reuse the orange bits with a $13 SRAM UDH, but it won't fit.

Their UDH violates the UDH license then, doesn't it? I thought the whole point of the license terms was that you can vary some details, but it has to be replaceable by another UDH.
