Agree with Ping.
The purple was really purple. I had a purple anno American stem. There's no mistaking it.

That said the anno colours varried. I had an OD green American frame with 3 "matching" stems but only 1 was an exact match.

The color you have is kind of an oddball one and not all are listed on the sheet. They had kind of a camouflage-y color that I've seen a few M16's done in. They may be a few one-offs or small runs of colors. When they say "purple", they mean purple as in Really Fabulous! Purple.

Yes anodizing can produce different results plus this one has some fading.

I don't have anything to compare so you both could be absolutely right.

As I look at it I don't see any brown in it...if we are using liquids as comparisons....others that have seen it in person have said it is wine red...root beer has not been mentioned.....could be I hang around with too many winos though. :)

But anyway when tductape and I meet again he can give a second opinion, he has good bike eyesight.

I wonder how many full bikes were anodized. I would really like to see a photo of them or of any the stems that have been anodized from ABM.

Thanks again for this...I like all information.

Mendon, the photo makes the difference look more dramatic than it was. My frame was probably like the color of the "decals" on your frame.

Ping: You got the other one that didn't match :) The stem that was a perfect match was really short.

Like a steel Teesedale Mt. Tam, Americans are some of the most undervalued aluminum frames of the 80's, early 90's.

Cracks me up when I see all these threads on other aluminum boutique brands getting new head tubes as part of their restore to fix the cracks, or a fresh Gossamer paint job, while the mighty American just plugs away. Something to be said for 6061.

Its a Cimmaron. Deerheads and all. I had to go down there yesterday for other reasons so I took the opportunity to rub against my old friend. Lol! Won't lead you on though. The seat, bars/stem, tires are not original. But if you would like your own classic American made Schwinn Cimmaron, a place calling themselves "BudgetBikeCenter" on the interweb has one for sale. I just looked at the ad. They are asking only $3499.00! Really.

One interesting thing about an anodized bike is that everything is anodized, unlike painted bikes. For example inside the seat tube, bottom bracket (including the threads). I think this might help prevent seizing of the parts...yes/no?
