Great job, Tyrone!

I'm glad more people don't put this one on their calendar... my 3-for-3 streak of standing on the top of the box would be in jeopardy if more racers and faster sandbaggers showed up!

Just joking... it really is a mt. biker's course. Roadie converts struggle on the Squaw Leap loop. Flow, chunk, HAB... hard, fun and scenic! My buddy who normally races Expert, but did the "Sport Long Course" (23 miler that was the pro/expert/sport course the past 6 years) and was feeling guilty about it, said afterwards (looking throttled, by the way)... "I don't feel like I sandbagged today. That hurt."

personally speaking: distance from the bay area. lack of nearby lodging. logistics involved in getting back to the start of the race. early season races are more likely to be skipped depending on fitness progression

Ha. Thx Sasha. I guess i had the right gear. Good seein ya there.

I love the Big Sandy. I always wonder why more people dont do it. I hear so many complaints about such and such race not having enough singletrack. And this and that race being all lame eAsy stuff. Big sandy is none of that. All singletrack. Great descents. Tech stuff. Fast stuff. Flowy stuff. Hard stuff. A real mtb'ers kinda course with 3 distance options, free beer, free post race food, and a great grassroots vibe with prize money for pro men, pro women, and pro/exp SS'ers. Attendance is good but i always wondered why it isn't more....

So Empty, where's your pix and race report?
I raced the 23 mile course with 30+ other people total, suffered on climbs, had so much fun on the descents and flowy sections, finished first, saw friends I only see at races, drank some good beer, ate some delicious tamales, got a ride to and fro in Ron's sponsor vehicle and went to bed tired. :D

I took pix at the Pro/Expert start only! Big Sandy 2014

This does sound like fun!

But yea, Rox is spot on. Why are there so many really good races in Norcal all before June? It's like the race calendar is all filled up every weekend early season. April is nuts, for example.

Talking to the locals, they say they don't ride this track come Summer... way too hot. Based on the absolutely perfect conditions I've experienced in '09, '13 & '14 for Big Sandy (weather, wildflowers, green grass, trail tread), I wouldn't be excited about racing in 90°+ temps if it was pushed back. I recall in '12 they had snow though!

Just curious, were there other NorCal races this past weekend competing with Big Sandy? Other than the High School race at Fort Ord, I don't think so. Sure Millerton Reservoir is a hoof from anywhere but Fresno, but so is Boggs, Downieville and Mendocino.

While the pro and masochistic experts (from a couple hours away) pretty much needed to be in town the night before in order to make the 8:30am start, the 10:30+ start was pretty cush for long course and the short course participants. Tyrone and I stayed in Clovis the night before, 30 minutes from the start. Easy cheesy. (Thanks Ty).

I'm just saying that there will always be excuses and reasons for not committing to a race. Fitness should not factor into the decision making around this race. I NEVER have been all that fit each time I've raced, but I've podium'd each time (SS long course, Vintage short course, age group sport long course). But regardless of whether you podium or not, sometimes to participate in a truly exceptional event is to win. Nobody here would regret the ya-ya's they experience from this fantastic course and the folks who make it happen!

p.s. shuttling to get your car is pretty dang easy if you simply talk to people.

FWIW.. my favorite races, due to them not being loopty-loop lap races:
- Big Sandy
- Shasta Lemurian
- Downieville Classic
- Tahoe Sierra 100
- Mendo Hundo (even though it was 82 mi. in '13)

Emptybeer, there was just Lake Sonoma series on the Day before. I ended up doing neither due to just feeling a bit burnt out on a busy work week and opting for a fun group ride closer to home. I didn't know much about this race before, so thanks to this thread, it sounds worth it next year!

Ah! That one didn't hit my radar. My bad! Yeah, I can't blame locals for staying local and racing the those trails in Spring conditions! Especially since it's part of a series they are competing in. My final point about Big Sandy is it is one of those "bucket list" races... well worth the effort if people put it on their calendar early in the year.

I wonder how much, if any, the various race promoters communicate with each other on calendars? My guess is close to nil. I realize it's hard enough to secure a date and get the proper permits as it is... then pray for decent weather. Although, if I were a race promoter right now, I'd make sure my race or races never fell on the same weekend as a NorCal HS race. Working in between HS races can quickly account for an extra 20-100 racers, depending on location!
