Let's see some pics and testimonials specs of your rigs, people. Getting mine tomorrow. Will put in my $.02 when I get some mileage in.

Your tires are tanks. You can't go weight weenie until you are ready to ride lighter tires. I personally love Rocket Rons. Light weight and great grip. Your cranks and brakes need to go, as do your wheels. If you aren't willing to make those changes, you should just enjoy the bike, as is.

what are you talking about discontinued ?

I have a new 2015 Defy composite coming

and have been riding a 2015 XTC Advanced Composite for two weeks now

wtf are you smoking ?

my new 2015 is a 27.5 XTC composite

and looky here a brand new composite 29'er XTC
XTC Advanced 29er 1 (2015) | Giant Bicycles | United States

Giant will -never- stop making composites, advanced, or advanced SL, these bikes rule and Giant is not stupid

Hmmm... I only see Defy Advanced, Defy Advanced Pro, and Defy Advanced SL for carbon framed Defy on Giant's website. I don't see a Defy Comp model like in prior years - of which I am an owner.

The Comp is a lower level carbon fiber which it does not look like Giant is producing anymore, nor is the manufacturer of the composite material for that matter.

Giant has two types of carbon bike frames for all models (except the purely alum ones) in 2015. Advanced SL or Advanced. Do you mean they had a third one of lower grade and that is discontinued ?

^^ Yeah I get it now, thanks

yeah Giant dumped it and now does it all in house
[regular flavor] or [$$$ flavor] with nanofiber

even the grade chart of fiber types is missing the bottom level

Advanced Composite Tech | Technology - Giant Bicycles | United States

------------------------------------
this is the 2013 Defy description

"Giant Composite Technology"

the Fork for it is called 'Advanced Composite',

so it was a mongrel of the old school and new school on the fork....and the type of fiber they are keeping for 2015 and forward

I'll say one thing about my new XTC advanced carbon...it rides SWEET everywhere and especially on climbs. So much better than other bikes I have owned which cost double or triple (1998-2000 vintage Litespeed Tellico and Yeti ARC, both loaded to the gills with what was then the top line XTR and Mavics)

Giant does know wtf to do with carbon and making a hardtail out of it for sure

They only use CoMax on very few road bikes like the Fastroad CoMax and cyclocross bikes.
It looks like CoMax frames have fiberglass inner layers and a cf shell. I'm sure Giant knows more about this than me but since cf is stiffer and more brittle than fiberglass, I would think it would be better to have the cf on the inside. CF on the outside would be stiffer but it will be taking all the load.
With cf on the inside, the fiberglass would take the initial load and after some flexing the stiffer cf would then reduce further flexing. CF on the outside would look better, though.
I see no CoMax mt bikes.
On Giants website I think they imply that they make their cf but since they use Toray part numbers for their cf, I think they don't make their own. Giants cf technology is their ability to design and build frames with Toray cf.

Any idea what a good condition 2013 xtc 29er 2 go for used? Would it be a good first bike?

I'm buying my first bike and debating over used or new. Right now even the used xtc is over my price range but am interested what would be a good price for this bike? I think it was 1400-1500 new in 2013
