For the past year (almost, just over 11 months) I have been using WTB Rangers, 27.5x28, fast/tough tires with orange seal.

The tires performed great for me, and only recently have I noticed a lack of performance off road. They have seen a pretty even mix of road, bike path, fireroads, double track, single track, and hike a bike.

While I do not have the exact number of miles they have seen, my best estimate is about 1200-1400 miles. Over the past 3 months I started logging my rides, and I am just over 500 miles, which was all in the woods.

Numerous times I have cringed, waiting to hear air leaking after picking a bad line and feeling the rear tire hop sideways off of a sharp rock.

The sidewalls show considerable surface damage, but they never once let go.

When I got the tires I installed them with 6 ounces of orange seal in each tire. I never added a drop in the last year. Only last week the rear tire started loosing more than a few psi between rides. It didn't go flat, but I had to add air to the rear before each ride.

As you can see from the pictures, most of the liquid was gone from the orange seal, but it was still gooey, and it still was doing its job. It was still weeping from the sidewalls to plug up any abrasions, and thorns and thickets were not giving me any issues.

12 months and 1200+ miles and this combo was nothing other than reliable. Zero fails on the trail. The tough casing plays a role in this, and there is a weight penalty for it, but this may be the first time in my life that a replace a set of tires with the same as what I had.

Nice review!

I used to run the Ranger 2.8's in Tough/Fast casings as well. They're a great all-around tire with an incredible amount of grip. BUT--I found that on my i30 rims the intermediate knobs disappeared after a while, leaving a terrifying dead zone that made the tires wash out on just about anything. So, sadly, with plenty of center and edge knobs remaining, they went into the garbage.

It's also worth noting that the 2.8's measure more like 2.65. IMO it's about the perfect size.
