Which rear rack for ICT?

I know Surly do an ICT rack, at inflated prices and with a poor fixing system......

Are there any better alternatives? The lower leg fixing points on the ICT are quite high on the seat stays which will rule out a lot of racks.

I have a Topeak fat rack on another bike and the clearances are silly huge, adding a lot of unnecessary width.

Cheers,
TC

I have had two ICT (sold the first one, regretted it, then bought a new one with the covid bike crisis in full force, I am so dumb :) ), the first one used the salsa fat bike rack. The second one I used the surly's fat bike rack. The surly rack is really wide, and oddly expensive, but works fine. If I was to do it again I would just get the salsa rack, or one of the many other wide racks with adjustable heights, like the fatback rack. CORVUS LCG+ RACK – Corvus Cycles. The Old Man Mountain racks have adjustable heights and are also a great option. I have one that has outlasted three frames, and while a bit bent now, still works great.

(There is a OMM rack under all that junk.. and it isn't on an ICT, but I think the mounting points are similar )

I have both OMM and the Surly Nice rear racks. The OMM's are on my Haibike Full FatSix. The Surly Nice rear racks are on both the front and rear of my Specialized Fatboy. For a full suspension, OMM all the way. But do not discount the Surly's. They are well built and you can't beat the stainless steel seat stays and other rack mounting hardware. On the Fatboy, I initially mounted the top stays to the seat stays. It looked awkward to me. Picked up a Problem Solvers Seat Post Clamp with Rack Mounts: Seatpost Clamp with Rack Mounts | Cockpit | Problem Solvers and it really cleaned up the look of the install. The neat trick about the lower rack stays on the Surly is that the stays slide inside the vertical rack stay tubes, which allowed me to lower the rack closer to the rear tire. This in turn, put the panner bags I use, lower.

The s/s screws that hold the top and bottom rack stays onto the frame with the Surly appear to be the same screw size as the OMM lower rack stay screw which is screwed into their exclusive Robert Axle Project rear thru axle.....

Surly Nice rear rack with Problem Solvers Seat Post Clamp with Rack Mount. Note how far down I pushed the rack down onto the rear rack stays in order to get the rack closer to the top of the rear tire. I don't believe you can do this with most other racks on the market.

Another idea is you may be able to modify a rack. I don't have rack mounts and drilled 12mm holes in a Fatliner rack for the axle, used the axle to sandwich the metal plates against the frame. Worked like a charm.

Maybe it's not poor as such, it just that all the weight goes into the vertical rods which are bolt fixed, so look prone to slipping?
Perhaps it's a none issue in use, but it seems like a design fault. I would have thought solid fix would be stronger, especially given the off road nature of fat bike touring?

The adjustability (of a few of these racks ) is appealing , allowing a low fit etc.
That last statement is of course contradictory to my desire for strength.

It is never easy in the world of the bike!!

I have an OMM on my Surly Wednesday. It is beefy and dependable. Light? Absolutely not. However, when I was riding the CT I came across another rider who was dealing with a broken, cheaper, lighter rack and I thought, poor bastard.... That can ruin a trip. I'll take strong and dependable every time. If I was worried about weight I'd look at my 220# ass and figure out how to lose some weight. As far as spacing goes, my OMM is about a half inch above both my 29+ and my 27.5x4.5.

On an Ice Cream Truck... Seems easy from this side of the screen, imo. Buy once, cry once and get a rack that will last many bikes....

Just popping back with an update.....
I decided on a Surly rack :). Fitted in minutes, unlike some previous racks on other bikes which needed a lot of fiddling.
But then I do have plans to mod the Surly rack......need a a top plate.....

Thanks to you all for your helpful input.
