I've been tossing around some ideas for gearing on a Big Mama I'm getting ready to build up. I really feel that 27 gears is total overkill, and since I want this to be a do everything bike I think I need more than 1 or 2. I'm pondering either a 1x3 or 2x3, but with a good difference in number of teeth on the rear to give me a wide range. I was thinking of using the smallest, middle, and largest from a cassette to give me a granny, moderate, and downhill/road gear. But will a derailleur be able to efficiently make that kind of jump, or will I have several ghost shifts in between gears? I've been hunting around for info on this but haven't really come up with much (at least not that I understand). Most of the 3 speeds I've seen have more gradual changes in number of teeth. Thanks for the input!
