You bring up a good point. I have no idea what the SL means. My guess is that it may not be standard from mfr. to mfr. Probably some ingenious acronym a marketing exec came up with after waking up at 2 AM in a cold sweat.

I can't wait to hear from others as to what it means.

Doesn't mean anything. It just sounds good. A lot of companies use it because its associated as super light. But like I said. There's no real industry meaning to it. Its just a catchy marketing label.

 

Rock shock SID SL, Avid SL, Marzocchi AM SL,.....
What does the SL stand for?

It can mean something different for each product line.
Marzocchi SL forks have dual air, same with the SID SL.
Pike SL forks are actually the lowest-end models. (??)

For Mercedes cars, I believe the SL stands for sports/luxury. In mountain biking, I have no idea what it means.

SL stands for "Secret Light", a small, self-sufficient blinking LED hidden deep inside the frame that flashes forever. Don't try to find it though, you'll wreck the frame.
