VeloPlugs = 9 grams for 56 plugs

Copied from my G+ page :

After removing all the tape I had a slight issue with the size of the plugs . Now there is a red version available with a smaller diameter plug but only by 1mm or so . So i decided to make the eyelets slightly bigger with the drill bit . I had to eye up the diameter with the right size drill bit as these plugs are tapered as well as having a gripped surface . I then deburred the eyelets with the sanding cone . I also deburred the valve hole as it looked a little rough to me . The plugs then simply clicked (with some force) into place .

Nice !!!

I don't think you would get any issues with the tape . The tape should hold up well . TBH if I had known about the tape I would have probably gone down that route . It would have been far quicker and less hassle to just install the tape than having to drill and deburr 58 holes (including valve hole) and installing ever single plug .

However I still also like the fact that these can be reused over and over again rather than having to spend money on new tape as eventually the tape will need changing .

Thanks for mentioning these karimian5, had never heard of them before.

I've just bought 48 of the red ones, they are for 7mm holes and fit perfectly into the spoke holes in my Easton carbon rims.

They seem to be pretty solid into the spoke holes, and have a gently chamfered edge so have no concerns about using them with ultralightweight tubes.

Best of all, they weigh 3.2g per wheel, thats 10.4g less than the Easton rim tape, making an overall saving of 21g saving in the most critical part of the bike, for ÂŁ7.62, cost per gram of ÂŁ0.36.

I'll go for anything that saves 1g for less than ÂŁ1, so these are great value.

Now, I can scrape together ÂŁ360 if someone can suggest a way to save a kilo off my 8.5Kg full sus bike ...

No probs . The best thing about them is that they can be reused over again so cheaper than replacing rim tape . Regarding the weight saving of your whole bike another kilo will likely be hard to achieve with that amount ....unless you're handy with a drill...no don't do that !!!

They were popular nearly 10 years ago now, but I guess more durable, light tape like the Stans Yellow has taken over in popularity/ practicality. Since the tape also lasts the life of the wheels there isn't much call for veloplugs anymore but a nice solution at the time of shonky rim tape
