How does it ride?

"I've cleaned more techy climbing sections, felt more confident on blind trails, and had more fun riding the Sentinel than many previous bikes. The Sentinel's climbing characteristics may require a bit of readjustment if you're not accustomed to Transition's geometry, but once you find the sweet spot, this bike will most certainly leave you satiated as you clean more technical bits than you have on any other bike."

Tall guy here, anyone running a sentinel (v1 or v2) with 175mm cranks? Everything about this bike looks perfect but I'm scared I'd be smashing cranks on everything since I do a TON of technical climbing (moab, southern utah) in addition to the bike park.

The fact that they spec the XXL with 170mm cranks kinda hints that it could be a bad idea given how low it is.

I'm wondering this as well. I have an XXL and want to move back to 175mm cranks

Yup on the suspension... the big difference is the geometry on the frames. I don't know what size you ride but look at the head, seat angles and the top reach. If you want to attack trails, the sentinel frame design puts you over the front of the bike, the mega tower does this as well but not to the extent as the Sentinel......IMO

Anyone ~6'4 have a point of view on XL vs. XXL? I'm 6'4 and on a XL Ripmo now. Debating between XL and XXL. With the Ripmo, and its 495 reach, I have to run a 60mm stem flipped up, 30mm spacers under the bars, and 40mm riser bars. Saddle is still well above the bars. Never sat on anything with 520 reach, and feel like I'm between sizing but would likely err on the side of XXL.

Just looking at the geo numbers...
Sentinel XXL:
521mm reach plus 40mm stem = 561mm
665mm top tube plus 40mm stem = 705mm

Ripmo XL:
495mm reach plus your 60mm stem = 555mm
655mm top tube plus your 60mm stem = 715mm

The XXL sentinel will pedal just a bit more upright than your current setup and have very similar in reach when standing/descending. And will allow you to reap the benefits of a shorter stem. The longer wheelbase should also help you feel more centered in the bike with your taller seatpost extension while climbing.

I'm about the same height as you and went through similar mental gymnastics in deciding my size. I ended up going XXL so this recommendation is biased, but I think it should hold true. I just received my frame this week and haven't finished building it up yet so no ride reports to share, but there are other tall guys on this thread that can probably chime in as well.

All good points and in fact I'm actually losing effective reach with all the spacers I'm running and a -1 angleset. Figure with the XXL I can run fewer spacers under the stem which should gain a few MM of reach. Let me know how yours feels when you get it out for a ride. I'm worried about the XXL feeling sluggish compared to the Ripmo on the flats and climbs, though I'm sure I'll be happy with the better descending performance.

Any Sentinel riders have time on the present version of the Norco Sight? I'm on the Sight XL and while I like the geometry (which pretty much matches the Sentinel) its a dog of a climber and could really benefit from a climb switch (X2) IMO. Wishful thinking I know, but wondering/hoping the Sentinel is a better climbing variation on the Sight. Its close to two pounds lighter but is it any more efficient/quicker?

In the pinkbike review of the new sentinel back in the spring, Mike Kazimer compares the two bikes. I don't think he specifically touches on climbing manners in his comparison, but I think a fair summary of the comparison is that the Sentinel is the more lively of the two with the Soght being more of a plow. You could probably extrapolate from there some fairly reliable conclusions about climbing manners.

Finished building my new XXL sentinel yesterday morning and got out for a first ride that afternoon. Needless to say I was not disappointed! This thing is such a ripper. It took me one lap to re-acquaint myself with 29" wheels as I was coming off a 27.5 YT Jeffsy, but I was very comfortable with the bike in no time. There's probably a touch of new bike stoke that is clouding this initial review but here it goes...

I am ~6'4", 200lbs, with a DH racing background. Frame size is spot on and I am really happy I didn't go for the XL.

Climbing: I was surprised at how good this thing clambers uphill. Its definitely is a big bike, but the seat tube angle and long wheelbase really put you in the center of the bike (as many reviews have said) and this equates to a surprisingly comfortable grind. The bike tracks around switchbacks with ease - even with the 170mm I am running up front.

Descending: So so fast! I couldn't push the bike hard enough on the trails I was riding and I can't wait to get on some more high-speed tech. I also can't wait to see how this does on a wide open flow trail with jumps. That being said, there is so much grip and confidence coming into corners and it just hooks up and corners on rails. Also, as is the case with all Transitions, the bike is really poppy and effortlessly turns small trail features into fun jibs. I had a chance to drop in on some steep lines yesterday as well, and the bike is really comfortable here - normally I am way over the back wheel on this trail just along for the ride but yesterday I found myself in more of an attack position over the front of the bike. Lastly, one of the things that just brings a huge smile to my face is how quiet everything is. There really is this dampened calmness and composure even at high speeds through rough. All I can hear is the trail and my hope hub singing in the back.

Build: Sentinel Carbon XXL with Fox X2
Fork: Fox 36 Factory Grip 2, 170mm
Wheels: Stans Flow MK3 hoops + Hope Pro 4 hubs
Tires: Maxxis Assegai 2.5 front, Minnion DHR 2.4 rear
Headset: Cane Creek 40
Stem: E13 plus 40mm
Bars: Deity Racepoing 35mm, 38mm rise, 810mm width
Grips: DMR deathgrip
Brakes: Hayes Dominion (love these brakes so much)
Drivetrain: Sram Eagle GX
Dropper: One Up 210mm
Pedals: Crankbrother mallets

I posted this on PB too, but I'm looking for opinions regarding the relative value of the XT and GX builds which are priced the same. I'm focused on:

- Fork/shock: 36/X2 Performance-level vs. Lyrik/SD Ultimate?
- Brakes: XT 4 piston vs. Code RSC?

I prefer Shimano drivetrains, but can live with GX if the dampers and brakes on the GX build are meaningfully better.

The only issue with the 65mm stroke is the resi and if it will contact the downtube on full compression. There’s a few pics over on the PB forum. Looks like it might clear but it will be close. If we had some measurements of different resi lengths, we could figure out one that would fit. 65mm stroke would increase rear wheel travel to about 156mm
