I'm going to be switching to a 1x9 setup and wanted to see if you guys recommend or suggest any certain setup (crank, chain guide, derailleur, etc) I ride an 09 X-Caliber currently set up with an 44/32/22T XT crank and a XT shadow rear deraileur with a Sram PG950 cassette. Your advice and opinions are appreciated.

some sort of bash guard and an inner chain guide (like a ngear jump stop). SS rings are nice, but not necessary ... then get your chain as short as possible.

I would like to use some parts from my current crank. Is that possible?

Absolutely!! Use the crank and the 32 ring. The only thing you will need to buy for cranks are chain ring bolts. You will need shorter ones, go with single speed version

If you go the bash guard route, you won't even need the shorter chainring bolts.

I can't get by with the ones I have now for a little? I want to ride tomorrow and I can't get shorter ones today.

Leave all the rings on and you will be fine. Run the 32 ring by itself with the regular bolts and i guarantee you will destroy the 32 chainring before you make it up the first climb

Why do you say that?

There will be tons of lateral play on the chain ring and i guarantee you will bend it.

I have bent chain rings from two of the four bolts being a little loose.
Just trust me or email me after it does not work:thumbsup:

What was youe solution and what do you recommend?

Like the other OP said... single speed or bmx bolts and you got a 1X9:thumbsup:

If you dont have time to get the bolts just run all 3 rings up front until you have time to get to the LBS

The regular 32 will work okay, but a SS ring will work better. They have taller teeth and will hold the chain on better. You will not "destroy the stock 32 on the first climb", unless you weigh 600 lbs and are a massive powerhouse.

Look into switching the stock outer ring for a bash guard, b/c one of the main reasons for going 1x9 is to get rid of that big ring. The jumpstop works fine, and you will probably need something on the inside, or you will drop a chain a few times each ride.

I meant he will break it if he runs it with the stock chainring bolts and takes off the other chainrings

Thank you. That's what I plan on doing. I have a couple shops around here I'm going to call up. I've been looking online and I'm having a little trouble finding a bash guard to fit my 32t chain ring.
